I recently had a problem with my Cendyne 52x24x52 buring at only 32x using a name brand 40x media.
After 30 minutes on hold with Cendyne, the solution seems to be that I needed to upgrade my Via 4in1 driver to the newest version.
Afterward, Nero NOW recognizes the burner as a 52x, though it still burns at a MAX of 32x on that same media, it does burn at 48x using another brand.
Just an FYI.

Solution to your problem:
Nero:
Recorder > Choose Recorder... > Options button > UNCHECK buffer underrun protection to enable burning at maximum speeds CDRW is capable of (if this option is limiting you to select only lower speeds).
DAMN that burns fast :p
and indeed try the buffer underrun protection, maybe its not got enough in buffer :)

Actually it sounds like he got a Lite-on with Smart-Burn.
Smart burn checks the media for its known fastest burn speed and sets it acordingly. It does this so that the media will burn without a large amount of errors that can cause the media to have problems later (the errors are handled by the error correction data, but scratches can make it completly unreadable.)
To turn it off in nero go to recorder -> choose recorder, highlight your burner and click on the options button, uncheck Smart Burn Enabled, and click ok. You will now be able to burn at any speed you like(whether the media can handle it or not.)
Let us know the firmware version of the drive and we can confirm that it is a liteon, and if it is you can upgrade the firmware to the newest version so that your media can be identified correctly.

According to Cendyne and the 3 different versions of the Firmware, I have an Asus.
I didn;t know how to turn off the SMART-BURN, but I don;t think I want to. It's been a while since I burnes coasters - since my 2x burner. I'd like to keep it that way. :)
Thanks all.

The real question here is are you writing a full 700MB of data to the disk? Chances are that you aren't, because the 52x burning speed won't kick in usually until the last 100MB or so are left. In other words, the burner will spool up as time goes on throughout the burn-process, until it reaches its limit. It might start at 8x, then after burning 50MB, speeds up to 16x, and after even more data is written, goes to 24x, etc. If you want to see where each of these points is for you burner, Nero has a little utility that comes with it that lets you find everything you want to know about your burner.

Socko, how can you leave me hanging? What is the utility and where is it?
BTW, I'm running Nero 6.

Nero cd speed. should be on your start menu in the nero folder.
And your drive wont stop and change speeds like older burners, if it is set to burn at 52x it will usually start burning at around 20x and gradualy get faster until it gets to 52x and then will finish at the top speed.
Smart-burn is seperate from the buffer underrun. Smart burn checks the media type using the atip data and sets the recomended burn speed, and will slow the burn speed down during a burn if it finds that it cant continue at the highest speed. There are many blank cdr's on the market that are sold as 48-52x that cannot reliably be burned at that speed. If you have smart burn enabled and it is lowering the burn speed then your drive is working perfectly.
