View Full Version : Cooling the computer....and the room at the same time

Ok, so I'm interested in phase-change or TEC cooling, as i'm in a dorm now, and the temperatures are unbearable. I was originally going to do a TEC/watercooling system, but evidently those shoot your room temperatures through the roof. So what i've decided to do now is figure out some kind of cooling that will cool both the computer and the room.

Of course, however, this seems mostly like a pipe dream to me. Is it even feasable? Could I perhaps use a water chiller to chill water, send it through copper pipes, blow a fan over those (reverse radiator I guess), and then send that water to the CPU, where it would (hopefully) be a high enough temperature to cease condensation?

Ok, enough blathering. How could I possibly do this?!

The thing is, you would need a BEAST to do both well. I think you are better off getting a used window ac from a thrift shop seperate from the cooler. The problem is, the cooler would have to be setup so that the heat exausts to the outside. Even if you had cold copper coils, if the condensing coils were inside, you would release as much heat into the room (actuallly a bit more) than you removed.

Thats my .02

That's the trick though. Air conditioners are not allowed because they draw too much power (wait, but my 1000w+ of computer equipment IS ok? *huh*?). So to get around that, I was hoping I could use it as a CPU cooler which, coincidently, cooled the room at the same time. I'm not looking for full-on AC; I just want the temperatures to be below 80 F in this room.

I think your best option would be to disguise the outside portion of the Ac unit as somthing else so they wouldnt notice. Like put some grass and tree limbs on it. Or dress it up like a doll and hope no one notices the noise...

I thought I had seen an AC unit that sat inside and had a simple duct that went to a window or hole in the wall.

i think they would pick it up anyone on what you are drawing from there power grid:)

you could get a big box fan and leave the window open all the time and mount it on the window... then your room would at least be near ambient :)
