View Full Version : Chevette Barbs
I got these barbs today, and im not sure if they will fit into my chevette heatercore (its still on its way to me).. heres a pic
http://www.andy-akb.com/images/XS1%20004.jpg
i am hoping to make all fittings 1/2 and use 3/8in tubing so if i ever want to get bigger tubing i can. i dont want my rad to be a bottle neck.
these barbs go from 1/2inch id to 1/2inch od? are these the correct ones? if not can u please link me to the ones i need.
will these fit in my chevette heater core? will i be able to have both the barbs 1/2inch? does anyone have 1/2in barbs on their chevette heatercore? how did u get them on (the guide on overclockers.com isnt really detailed)
thanks a lot

They should work fine. If the core comes with 5/8" barbs then they will fit over the core barbs. If it come with 5/8" inlet and 3/4" outlet then you can solder one inside and one outside like I did.

Hey eXCeSS,
Warning: I am currently working thru my first WC effort, so I may not be the best reference. :)
However, I bought a 1986 Chevette heater core and thought you might like to see what I did. I picked up the exact same barbs as you, but I did not use them on the heater core. When I got the core I saw that it has two tubes on it. One has to be 5/8"ID and the other looks like 1/2"ID. I am using 1/2"ID tubing and I was able to stretch the tubing onto the core inlet/outlet pipes by soaking them in bioling water for a minute or so. It wasn't easy, but it worked. Since all the threads I have read talk about eliminating restictions, I did not see a reason to cut off the big pipes and replace them with smaller barbs.
Here is a picture of the top of the core with the hoses connected.

I am using a VaiAqua 1300 pump and it came with a bag full of plastic hose barbs. After trying to use the brass A-385s and having continuos leaks, I switched over to two 1/2"ID plastics barbs that came with the pump. These barbs had longer thread sections and O-rings below the hex head. No more leaks, but I once again had to stretch my 1/2ID tubing using hot water. Here is a picture of the pump with the hoses attached:

I am not sure if this helps, but at least you can see the size of the pipes on the heater core.
Good luck
soshootme-thanks, that helped, but it looks like youre using tha 1/2"id tubing and i dont think my 3/8"id tubing would stretch as well as the larger 1/2" type, i will definitley try but chances are it wont work.
also, how loud is that pump? i am planning on getting a l30, but i don thave alot of money so im really willing to try anything.
FRAGN'STIEN-thanks alot, so i guess im putting one inside and one outside.
another thing-if i bring this to a aircondidioning/heater/refrigerator rapair shop, will they solder/weld these on for me? how much might it cost?
thanks a lot

eXCeSS - I think you are right about that 3/8" tubing being too small to make the stretch on the cores tubes. Like I said, I am a noob. :)
The ViaAqua 1300 was a lot louder than I anticipated. I was surprised how loud it was, but I found a thread that talked about gluing the impeller to quiet the pump.
http://www.wc101.com/guides/ViaAqua/
I was amazed. The pump is now virtually silent, but.... it does not start right up anymore. It takes a little while (like 10-20 seconds) for the impeller to turn since I glued it down. I will be running the PC 24/7, so that isn't a big concern to me. The number of leaks I had to contend with was a concern. I ended up using silicone caulkig to seal the pump return housing semi-permanently.
Search for "ViaAqua" in the forum and read all the experiences the folks here have had with these pumps. I failed to do that and bought purely on price. The pump is quiet and leak free now, but it does run very warm to the touch. In retrospect I can see why some of the more popular pumps carry a higher price.
anyone else? my basic question is what did u do to get your heater core compatable with your w/cing setup? i really need help . thanks

Here is my set up:
Heater core --> 5/8" ID short tube -> 5/8" barb (1/2" male NPT) --> 1/2" barb (1/2" female NPT) -> 1/2" ID tube
Basically it is a 5/8"-1/2" barb coupling.
My via takes about 10-20 seconds to startup also (w/ impeller mod).
SOShootME - since you use the plastic hose barbs that come with the via do you use the fill hole to fill/bleed your system? I was curious about how well that works.

Hey Soja,
I have a t-line that I have been using for filling/bleeding. The little tube in the barb on the input side looks like it might work for small amounts of additives like dyes or coolant that you want to mix in quickly. I don't think it is big enough to use as a fill/bleed opening.
I pulled the cap off the little tube with the pump running and it sucked air in. Then you need to bleed the bubbles again, so it is a pain to use unless you can think of a setup to keep the air out.
I added a few drops anti-foam stuff that is actually for my hottub, it really cuts down on the foaming/bubbling. I am sure it is very similar to the ingredients in other products (like water wetter, etc) that reduce the waters surface tension.

Would you still recommend this mod though?

I don't know if I recommend the mod or not. I just did it about 4 days ago. It makes the pump nearly silent, but has the drawback of affecting the startup. Since I will be running mine 7/24 I won't have a lot of startups to worry about.
The other issue is how long the glue will hold. I have seen a few threads where people are saying they have to redo the mod at regular intervals. That will be a major PITA if true. Of course the first time the glue fails will be a deciding point on wether I redo the mod. If I do, I will try some RTV gasket sealer that is used in automotive water pump assembly.
I guess doing the mod is worth the noise reduction. However, if you are putting the modded Via in a PC that will be stopped and started on a daily basis I would be very careful. It would be a good idea to monitor the pump's startup lag times before trusting a relay to start the pump and CPU at the same time. I would hope there is enough heat removal capacity in a full waterblock to keep the CPU from frying till the flow kicks in, but that is what it is... a hope. :)

lol, thats not a very hopefull post! thanks for the info though...not sure if I'll do it or not....how unbearable is the noise?
btw sorry to hijack thread

Go over to the mod article at:
http://www.wc101.com/guides/ViaAqua/
The author has linked some mp3's of the before and after. I said "no freakin way" when I listened to the after, but the modded sound level is accurate.

SOShootME, what kind of tubing are you using? clearflex? tygon? i was thinking of doing the same thing- streching the tube.
i was wondering where everyone buys their chevette hcs? do i just go into autozone or pepboys and ask for 86 chevette hc? thats the cheapest way right?

kelvin,
I got my heater core online from autozone.com. I think it was 19.99 + shipping.
I got my tubing from DangerDen, it is the "ClearFlex 60". I just stuck a beer mug of water in the microave for a couple minutes and then stuck the end of the tubing in for another couple minutes. You may need to try a couple times to get it streched on there, so be patient.
ok so i got my heater core today (yay) and the barb is the same size and the 5/8th thing, but it fits snugly over the smaller thing. is this ok to go and sweat this on over the thing, rather than inside? ill use some of that plumbers tape before i sweat it.
heres some pics.
