View Full Version : PENCIL TRICK, YES OR NO?

OK IF I DO THE PENCIL TRICK AND REI-INSTALL THE CPU AND RE-BOOT, HOW WILL THIS ALLOW ME TO OVERCLOCK? NEW OPTIONS IN MY BIOS? I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS CAUSE ALL I FOUND TO ADJUST IN BIOS IS PCI LATENCY AND GRAPHICS APERATURE. MY BOARD HAS JUMPERS THAT I SET TO CONFIG SO I COULD MANUALLY ADJUST MY CPU SPEED BUT AFTER RE-BOOTING, BIOS SAID 600MHZ AND ITS OKAY, AND THAT WAS IT. ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANX, GERRY

Yes definately,
Yes alot of the motherboards nowadays let you overclock without unlocking the CPU, but i found it was much easier to do it when i did unlock my CPU, I was able to simply just up my multiplier.
Before when i overclocked i did not get even close to the results i am getting now.
Don't believe the hype its really easy, unless your blind, all you need is a sharp pencil, then boom your in the game........

Gerry I don't think that you can do very much with a gateway as they are not very oc friendly form what I hear. There seem to be no multiplier settings in your bios if there are jumpers on your mobo that you can set your multiplier by, then thats how yoou will have to do it. In order to do that you will need to unlock your cpu ie the pencil trick. If you don't unlock it it will only boot at 600.

Unlocking the chip does not open any bios options.

SO IF IN MY BIOS THE ONLY THING TO ADJUST IS PCI LATENCY AND APERATURE, THEN THERES NO SENSE IN UN LOCKING THE CPU?

i think your caps lock button is stuck

Yeah no sense in unlocking it, since it won't let u change anything. Unless you have some jumpers on your motherboard that let you set your CPU multiplier, then the unlocking would be well worth the effort.

hang on, gerry! don't go cutting and connecting all your bridges just yet. people just didn't read your first post before replying.

no, unlocking your cpu will not give you any new options in bios if they aren't already there. but you did say that you had settings on the mobo. which settings are they? multiplier, frontside bus and vcore? if you have those three, then you're set. the reason they had no effect the first time is cos you hadn't unlocked your proc. only once you've unlocked the proc would any dipswitch controlling the multiplier have any effect. read your mobo's documentation. if you have the above-mentioned options on the mobo, then unlock your chip and go for it. if you don't have all three, then the only effective way is going to be with the bridges, as kat suggested.

good luck! :)

unfortunately my 3 jumjper settings are only for:
Flash/pwd, j21/wol, speaker.
ha ve no idea what the hell the first two are do u guys?
im pretty sure the first set is for flashing bios. so if i dont have the settings available mentioned in the last post above then where can i get an overclocking card to do it and will i need to complete the bridges even with an overclocking card? whew! thanx all!

by the way, how in the hell do i get the plastic cover off the processor? i got one end off but freaked out trying to get the other one off and then put it back lol.
and when i do get it off will i be able to just pop out the cpu or will i have to remove those 4 pins that go through the fins on the heatsink?

lol, umm gerry, sounds like you have a SLOT ATHLON, and ummm well you can't use a pencil trick on them, the pencil trick only works on SOCKET CPU's. You'll need to buy yourself a goldfinger device to overclock your CPU. The good news though, is that if you buy one, it will work with your motherboard for sure.

Probably the cheapest place you will find them is on Ebay. I did a search for them on there for you, here is a link to that http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&ht=1&query=GFD
Any of them should do, and they should cost u between $10-25 depending on how the auctions go. All of them probably work the same, but the only one I have tested is called something like "Northwind Rev. 3" . You might be able to find them at a website as well, but they will likely cost $30+ .

No, I just friend my 900 by doing the trick. Im not an inexperienced overclocker either., I overclock almost all my pc's. I just got this one in a few weeks ago, and decided to try to up my 900 Thunderbird to 1K, and there it went.
My 1.1G replacement should be here thursday.

How did the trick fry it? I don't think that the trick would do it, I don't see how it could, I would assume it would be because u didn't mount the heatsink right or something. Let me know if I'm wrong.
