I have a 1ghz t-bird and because i'm so inpatient I loaded the it up without thermal paste cuz the shop was out of it. It runs pretty hot at 58^c idle. How much would thermal paste drop the temp providing I would only get the cheap crap?
hmmmm...I'm sure that there are a lot of dead chips out there ..for having tried the very same thing ....
thermal paste is as important as oil in your engine ;D

Thats way too hot for a 1 ghz Thunderbird, even without thermal paste, my 1 ghz t-bird ran about 30 C idle only using the thermal pad that came on the heatsink, and the fan i was using was only a coolermaster DP-6H51 or something. What kind of fan do you have anyway?

My son (13 ) did the same thing with his brand new athlon 900 chip a while back against my insistence for him to wait till the next day when I could stop by Radio Shack and get some.( I figured anything is better than nothing. ) Now he has everything he needs for his computer except for a chip. He killed it. He is now working off the price of the dead chip and will be working for a while to get a replacement. The bright side is ...He will have a nice key chain when he is old enough to drive.
The moral to this story is... No paste....What a waste.

I'd say maybe 5 degrees Celsius if your lucky. Asus probe reports temps much higher than Abit motherboards, so 58 degrees C isn't dangerously high, though I would try to lower it. :)

Had it been me by myself I would have given it a shot but When you are a parent you want to teach your child not to lie or cheat and most of all you want them to listen to their parents when they say " DON'T DO IT". It was an expensive lesson and he has really taken it to heart, I think. I plan on doing the right thing though. I'm going to kick this 1gig over to him and find myself a 1.3 AXIA or AVIA. This way MOM will be more inclined to let me get a new play toy.

3 rules when dealing with computers:
1. Overclocking is good!!
2. Too much heat is bad!!
3. Kids are a great excuse to buy a new computer!
recently bought this new system, 1g AXIA @ 1430, kk266, etc after convincing my sweetie how good it would be for our daughter to have her own computer (my old K2-300)
Lets see...maybe when the palominos come out it will be time for my son to have his own computer too (he'll be 3 years old, after all ;D )
I've already built a computer for everybody in the house, what's next? Have more kids or just take the hsf out of one of the kids' computers?
Seriously though, about the temps on an A7V133, I've got couple of ASUS boards, and it has been reported that the readings in the ASUS Probe are as much as 10C higher than actual. On my A7V133 with a DURON 600 cranked up to 1.13G the temps reported by the Probe are in the 49 / 52C range under a load.
I still wouldn't run that CPU without some sort of thermal compound.
