View Full Version : Should I try a Duron 750?

Well, my attempts at 1.1ghz on a Duron 800 failed. Can't get my computer stable above 10x100 = 1000 or 7x133 = 931. For some reason, the first time I used my new processor @ 8x133 = 1.06ghz it worked fine, but the performance has been steadily decreasing. Here's the deal. I work at a computer store, we got a nice shipment of Durons last week, and I picked this 800 from them for $65. I can take this Duron back and try a 750, or I can keep trying on this one to tweak it to get AT LEAST 1.06ghz. What should I do? Try a Duron 750 for about $15 less, or stay with the current and just work with it a little?

Well I have tried one Duron 750 and one Duron 800 and both overclocked to about 1000 mhz. If I were u, I'd return the 800 and get another 800, see how well it performs :)

Oh I had that slowly stability decrease thing happen to me once as well. I had a Duron 600 @ 950..... then after a few weeks, it was only stable at 900 mhz and not 950 anymore, odd. Well hope this helps!

A little side question... my computer runs 100% stable at certain speeds, but I get errors in Prime 95. Does this mean I am too high, or is it just a little problem with overclocking?

OMG WHAT IS GOING ON. MY PROCESSOR IS SOOOO TEMPERMENTAL. Now I am running 1.05ghz 10.5x100, when I first booted up, there were absolutely NO problems, perfectly stable, but when I ran Prime95, it would freak out and say there were rounding errors or something. Guess what? Ran Prime again (30 mins later), and there are no errors. Hmmm... verrrry odd. If anyone could give me any hint as to this activity, drop a post.

Is your room temperature Increasing/decreasing? I notice that when all 3 computers are on in this room, stability greatly decreases after we all play games for awhile. I think the reason for this decreased stability is the fact that room temperature goes from about 75 degrees to (estimated) 90 degrees. Just one possibility.

Geez, I hate to keep posting on this thread, but right now, in an pitiful effort to boost my overclocking abilities... I am running SiSoft Sandra Burn In and Prime 95 at once. I have Via Hardware Monitor up, and it is showing 49C as CPU temp. Is this ok to be burning in my processor at 10.5x100 and 1.85vcore 3.6 IO, or am I going to end up with a keychain?

You wont end up with a keychain. While being an acceptible temperature for burning in, you should shoot, afterwards, for a lower running temp though. I, personally, do not acept anything above 45C.

I have found that ambient room temps greatly impact overclocking. I started with my Duron 650 at 1080 during March and slowly it's been scaling back because the room is just too warm. I can't cool my office enough to supply colder air to the cpu. As summer rolls in here in Chicago, it will be HOT and air cooling just won't cut it unless you have A/C. However, my problem is that my thermostat is out in the living room and the heat sensor is too. So, my thermostat will say it's 70oF in my apartment, while it's 1,000oF in the office.

The 750's are legendarily terrible overclockers.... I'd stay with the 800 or go to a 700 or lower.

If you work in a shop, I would recommend that you try to get ahold of a DURON 600 "AKBA". I have a couple of them at or over 1100MHz. It is well documented as to the performance of these CPU's.

As far as the heat issues, as we move into the warmer months, this is something that you will have to address, either scale back or take the necessary steps to increase your cooling.

Good luck!

My duron 700 only got to 978 for about 3 days then... trouble came back to town 900 then 884 and that was my fastest stable 100% out of my 700 now robjustice got his 100% stable @ 1016 so its all in the codes although I just looked at 700 AUT1B AKBA 0033CPBW how do the600 and 700 differ?

Figured it out. First off, I was thinking that blowing cold air right onto my hsf would help, but when I reversed the flow back to how it should be (air blowing out the back) I was able to lower temps about 2C. Dunno why, but I also put the front fan to "suck" instead of "blow" :) Then I took my computer to work, and tested it with different types of RAM before I changed processors back to a 750. Guess what. First try with PC133 128meg chip, started up 100% stable at 8x133. Put back in my 256 PC133 MICRON!!! and it didn't work. Found some more 256 chips. Tried a few, some worked, some didnt. Ended up picking a no-name 7.5ns PC133 256meg chip. Wierd, huh? Last question, I promise! I sometimes get errors in Prime 95 (about 10% of the time) at these high speeds. Should I lower, or is it ok? I am running SERIOUSLY 100% stable right now, no errors, no crashes, no nothing. It is wierd.

There are rules but no guarantee on OCing. Most of all, being patient, Having Fun if we got Lucky that is all about this great hobby. I guess I just got lucky... It was hard for me at beginning but it got better, not worse, and finaly a 800 Duron at 1066, very stable :-) :-) :-)
