search is down. sorry if this has been done b4

ok, im running win 2000 pro (updated fully) service pack 4.
at bootup, win loads ok but 20 sec in, i get a window with the big red/white X and an "ok" button??!! if i close or hit OK it closes but comes back in 30 sec.
if i open task manager, it closes by itself in 10-20 sec. while its open ive seen as many as 50-100 processes going, most all are net.EXE or CMD.exe these seem to keep my DSL line going like nuts.
i cannot update windows it cant scan for updates

PLEASE help if i need to give more info, tell me what. this has happened to me b4 and i formatted and reinstalled Win 2k but this is gettting me
thanks for any suggestions

PS im NO computer programer, please keep it simple

A virus. Nothing else. I'd recommend a reinstall, cause virus removal may be complicated. And don't forget to install an antivirus after reinstall.

when you go to "service", do you see a lot of services running ???

try to disable or manual them to see if you have the same problem

I highly doubt this is a built in windows service.....its gotta be a virus or trojan or the like.

Sounds crazy...let us know what happens

i disable *random* services and haven't had any problem so far. Everything is fine

if disabling is dangerous like you said, try "manual" thing

i'm sure it is less dangerous :)

well, its been a long week here. (im getting good at reinstalling) after a little research, it turns out to be a worm. it attacks comps with "easy" administrator passwords...ie none or "admin" or such, it trys like 10 simple passwords. google search "net.exe cmd.exe" to get the info that saved me. HAVE A PASSWORD!!
thanks to all who posted!
PS i had Norton anti-V running and opened NO unknown emails and still got it.
