Say you have 1 stick of pc4000 mem. And you have a pc3200 mobo. If you stick that pc4000 mem into you mobo will you have 4gb/sec bandwidth or just 3.2gb/sec bandwidth? Or if you run pc4000 in dual channel mode will you have 8gb/sec bandwidth or just pc3200(DC) bandwidth?
Thanx for your replies

all that stuff is therotical. if you run a mb at pc3200 and the memory at pc 3200, the therotical bandwidth is 3200. however it will be somewhat less.. If u replace the memory with pc4000, the scores will be probably somewhat higher than the original setup. but will not actually run pc3200.(depending on the chipset and memory controller) Same thing holds true for dual channel (6.4-8.0 respectively). this is a real simplified explaination, maybe one the engineering guys explian it better..

you explained it very well but i guess i was trying to ask if you put pc4000 mem in a pc3200 board will you have 3.2gb/sec applied bandwidth or 4gb/sec applied bandwidth?

it will be what you set it to in the bios
if you have the ram set to 200 you will have 3.2gb/sec
if you set ram to 217 you will have 3.5gb/sec

i don't know what pc4000 is (maybie 240-250?)

if its on a board that only suports pc3200 ram(200)then you will have to overclock it
