Well guys I am selling my P4 3.0c on ebay hope to get $300~370.Already sold my Abit IC7. Now I am looking on buying a new amd cpu and board along with a Prometeia Mach I. I already ordered the Prommy and now I have to pick the CPU. I am not experienced with AMD as I am with intel so I need some help.
If I am looking on doing 3ghz or more on Prommy which CPu and motherboard should I get.
I can get up to a 3000+ (im not willing to pay the $400 for the 3200+ its a rip)
I thought maybe a Barton 3000+ 400mhz or an 1700+. I have no idea which one will go farther and is better for gaming/windows xp performance.

2100+'s are pretty good (some have been seen over 3G), the erlier the week the better.
1700+'s probably wont get you to 3G with prommy since it took LN2 to get one there last time I saw.
I would say your best bet is a 2100+ or maybe 2400+, as far as I have seen the bartons don't OC as well Mhz wise but offer slightly better preformance because of extra catch. I would get one of the T-Breds myself (2100+ probably).
And an Abit NF7-S rev.2 mobo too:D

Oh cool. Yeah I was thinking Nf7s rev2 as well. I just got off the phone with hardware gods http://www.hardwaregods.net/prometeia.html
The guys I am buying prommy from. The guy seemed very l33t. Took many tries to get through though. He also suggested the NF7-S v2 but he said that the 2500's were good before but now their slipping. He suggested a Barton 3000+ for the best chance. Any opinions. I could get a 3000+ w/ 400mhz FSB for $267 via newegg but if the 2100+ or 2400+ is truely better let me know. thx!

Well the 2100+ are the best preformance price ratio for sure but I don't really know wich would offer the best. To get a good idea you could also check out the OC CPU database, keep in mind that some are fakes though  most are real:
http://www.cpudatabase.com/CPUdb/
Well I checked, Most the the 1700+ entries are bull (most of the ones at the top anyways), the 2100+ has many in the high 2G range but its kinda luck as to wether you can hit 3G's, one guy on here went through somthing like 11 2100+'s before he finally got one that did 3Ghz. The 3000+ has no prommy or vapochill entries so it may do quite well bt you can't really be sure without trying. There has to be a first for everything:D

a 2100+ AIUHB will make it to 2700 mhz. i know cuz ive done it. that was on an Abit NF7-S rev.2 id go check someplace like www.excaliberpc.com for the proc because they guarantee the steppings
*edit* heres a link

Though I agree with you you cant really gaurentee it will make it, it just doesn't work like that (though it probably will).
And ya, excaliber gaurentees it but if you have a local PC store and they order it directly from abit, not just from maybe a warehouse's stock you will get Rev.2. I would go excaliber if you have access to a credit card.

intel 2.4c ghz. no question.
Realistically, I would expect any higher than 2.8ghz on an unmodded Prometeia. It simply is not possible. Your best bet would be, as others have stated, either a good 2100+ or 1700+ DLT3C. If you're getting it modded with R404A, then its an entirely different story.

The board is pretty easy imo: nf7/s.
I don't think any of the current amd chips have a good chance of hitting 3GHz, even with a prommy. 3G is still fairly rare and, like CrashOveride mentioned, you'll probably have to go through several chips to find one that will do it. I still think your best bet would be a 2100+. However, there are some pretty high numbers from less "well-studied" chips like the 2700+ tbred and 2800+ barton on the OC seti benchmark results page (http://www.ocsetiteam.com/other/bench.htm) (i.e. Caprid's benches. The seti benchmark results aren't a comprehensive database but I tend to trust the numbers more since they had to submit a flawless work unit.)
My 2100+ tops out around the 2900MHz mark but I seem to recall that a few were getting similar results with less voltage last fall/winter. That always led me to believe that my chip, though good, wasn't the best.
A 3GHz daily driver will be even tougher I think because you will no doubt need some serious vcore.
Prometiea, Vapochill, and all other case bound refrigeration systems, up to, and including solid state heat pumps such as pelts are evil, horrible creations that are good for burning yet not much else.
My $.02
Get a water coolign system or a good heatsink.
EDIT- There is no way to hit 3Ghz on an AMD stable, possibly with Ln2, bot no way for over 2 minutes.
To some people, spending that amount on cooling is a very good investment. Please don't bash others' purchasing decisions so bluntly. 3 gHz can be reached with the better steppings of AMD's. JCViggen had his modded Prometeia running one at 3.0ghz, Prime95 stable, I believe.

Ok well Ive come to a moment where I am unsure wether its Prommy or Vapochill. I can afford a Vapochill Pe, Vapochill XE, or a Prometeia Match I. Which one should go for. If the difference is only ~100-200mhz then its vapochill. Otherwise prommy all the way!

One thing is for sure. Its 2100+ Tbred and NF7-S v2
now for the cooling prommy or vapochill
un modded prommy vs vapochill how much mhz are we talking about?

look at those results the prommy got holst 800mhz with his 3000+
also what would be a better setup
vapochill pe w/ 3000+ vs prommy w/ 2100+
i just cant decide wether to go prommy or vapo and how much mhz the difference is

ask kunaak. he has prometia, and has tested multiple cpus to see which can get the highest. i would say the most potential is from a 1700, and a 1700 at 2.8ghz will most likely be faster than a 2100 at 2.8ghz....plus if the cpu dies, it would be much cheaper to replace.

You are wrong.

I am pretty sure when it comes to a T-Bred B vs a T-Bred B (1700+ vs 2100+), they will preforme nearly identicle at the same mhz. After all its the same technology, basicly the same die, one is just rated faster. Bartons on the other hand are differnt, they have extra cache, and palmilos are a differnt as well. I would get the 2100+ because it is rated higher, the only reason most lower end processors (the 1600+ of the palmilos for instace or hte 1700+ of T-Breds or the 2.4C vs the 3.0C) gives a higher OC is because its rated lower but it is BASICLY the same as the higher end processors. Just cheaper.
btw, Kunaak is the person who got 3Ghz with a prommy.

chip for chip, i think you have a better chance with the 1700. 2100s are closer to the top end of the chip (which still isnt that close, but it makes a difference) also, the 2100 run at a higher voltage, and when it comes to a 1700, the 1.5v models for the most part, overclock alot better at lower voltages than the 1.6v models.

More people seem to use prommy. For that, however, I would start a new thread in the extremem cooling seciton of General cooling.

Prometia, of course. The highest clocks below LN2 are almost always on prometias. There are quite a few threads on this in the extreme cooling section. It seems to come up once every few months.

I got just ordered a Vapochill PE. Seems that Prommy Mach I is going to be discontinued. Besides a vapochill is a better investment after Mach II that is because Vapochill has a better chance of working with all of the new mobos/cpus and it already supports more motherboards then the Prommy.
Going to sell it after 1-2years and get a Mach II or Mach III whatever is out.
Now to get the CPU
Hey Cuchulainn this is a dumb question but I am just intrested. I know this has NOTHING to do with real performance but on your rigs does everything load within a few secs after you click it. This 3.0c i am using it until it sells wow 1 click and Poof the window is open. Heh
What ram would you suggest?

a VAPO DEFO......the price the looks ..........you have to have ln2 to run 3 ghz .....and for how long !
my mate runs 24/7 with a 2400xp @2700 on a vapo ...its so quiet as well .......and looks fab .....the xe will cool it better but as for getting higher mhz out of your cpu well maybe but not much at all ....thats for sure ..........if you want the extra cache then a 2500 xp will do fine that will also do 2700mhz

If you are using AMD, I would reccommend Prommy because the mounting head is less likely to cause core damage.
Why I bashed your buyign decision, which I would have reccommended 6 months ago, Is because Thermal spec for next gen procs (prescott etc) will likely hit above 130w, which IMHO is what a Prommy can remove without having to restart every hour or so,\.

Wow thats a hot setup. 2100+ @ 2.9ghz that is sexy! Beats out any canterwood chip besides ones that are oced to 3.8Ghz+.
Hey just intrested. Out of these chips which would have the best chance of 4Ghz on a Vapochill because my best friend got a vapochill too and he wants to know -> 2.4c, 2.6c, 3.0c I suggested one of those 3 to him. I did not suggest 2.8c because they do not oc as well as the others the majority of people have them at 3.5~3.7...
I seen 2.4c @ 4Ghz on Vapochill

Pentium 2.4C rules.
My system works at 3.2 GHz using default voltage passing torture test on Prime 95. I also have a Barton system system with 2.2 GHz but I need to increase voltage for that. I heard people getting 2.3 GHz fairly often but I also hear people getting 3.3 GHz fairly often on 2.4C.
2.3 GHz means 25.7% overclock for Barton, 3.3 GHz means 37.5% overclock for 2.4C Pentium.
And more my Pentium scorches my Barton in just about any benchmark, they are not even close.
I love them both but 2.4C rules.

I'd get a 2.4C
CrashOv3r1De
09-05-03, 07:23 PM
2.4c is comming
Why did you sell your 3.0c? didn't overclock too good?
A 2.4C is a really good choice and it costs a little less than half of a 3.0C.
However when you sell a used CPU most likely you will lose 25-30% of the retail price.
I'm pretty happy with my 3.0C
Is doing over 3.7Ghz just fine at 1.6v
Note that the 2.4C usually do between 3.1Ghz and 3.3Ghz. If you are lucky you will get over 3.3Ghz but really you gotta get a good chip for that.
I tested a 2.4C CPU with the same cooling I'm using for my 3.0C and I could only get it to 3.2Ghz stable. Of course that is 800Mhz overclock so no complaining really.
However some people have reported up to 3.6Ghz on air. That's why I said if you are lucky you might just get one of those that do over 3.3Ghz.
Now if I only had better RAM I could really test how far my chip can go.
I mean my temps are
15C idle and 30C under full load.

:eh?: wow... it doubles when under load?!! do you have some power saving or something?!!
Yes it doubles. Power saving?
as in going to suspend mode?
Well I always leave the power saving options as default in the bios. MY PC never goes in suspend mode. My monitor however does go into suspend mode after 20 mins.
also how about this.
My video card temps are.
21-23C idle and 70C under full load.
This cards get really hot.
Normally they run arround 38C idle and like 85C under full load. Of course overclocked to the max I heard they can reach 90C.
