Scarry, I was just comming to post the same question. Athalon or Duron :-) About the Mobo I am thinking about the Abit KA7E vs the KT7A with the 266 FSb option, prices on pricewatch, A- $119 $13 UPS Ground ,E- $102 10 FED EX . I have 2 weeks to decide, comp show comming. Comments on either Mobo.

Oppps I mean the KT7E. CPU price's @ pricewatch are close to same.

get the c type athlon lowest 266fsb they have is 1Ghz but it comes unlocked and the AXIA OC like a mofo. you can get them for 157shipped.

bump. spend a bit extra on the cpu and get a nice one! if you _have_ to go low, then get the duron and overclock it! spend the money you save on a nice mobo or nice ram. you can upgrade the processor at a later stage, then.

I'd check the CPU database and see what kind of OCs people got with the variouse cpus. I'd say go for the c type athlon as well (go on, spend some cash)...or if you have to go cheap, get the Duron 600 (try to get something like an AKBA). These typically will hit about 1000Mhz no problem.

I would reccomend a Duron 800 and Abit KT7A-Raid motherboard.. as these clock well and are a good base for further developments.. the money saved from buying a Duron instead of a Athlon could be spent on cooling, or put towards somthing equally as important as ram, or a graphics card

800 Duron @ 1050 mhz with Global Win cooler
Abit KT7A-Raid Motherboard
512 mb ram
Elsa Gforce 256 with Blue Orb ( core @ 132 mhz , memory @ 174 mhz )
Sound Blaster live
Full Tower with 5 fans

I don't think getting a KT7E would be skimping.... I'd say get that mobo and a 1 GHz AXIA Thunderbird. Possibly the best price/performance combo, as a 1 GHz AXIA is likely to hit at least 1.4 GHz.

Another vote for an AXIA processor. If you look at over-all system cost, the price of one of these processors is relatively small.

They are now really plentiful in the lower speeds..even those that have a letter as the first character of the third line.

The addition to overall cost is so little, and the potential performance increase so great, that there really is no other choice.
