Well the Title says it all, I was thinking of getting the 1700MHZ Athlon XP Thoroughbred so I can play about with it, but maybe there is another cpu that I can overclock with and has less chance of messing up! The only thing my mobo only supports up to 266 FSB and Athlon XP 2000. So any opions anyone?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your mobo supports Palominos only and not Thoroughbreds.
Be sure to check the official mobo web site for compatibility before getting a 1700+ T-Bred B.

Instead of iTouch Logitech Wireless Keyboard & Mouse post what the actual mobo model is, post cooling and post the brand of your power supply.

Please specify your full specs of the PC, including mobo, ram, psu, cooling etc.
When u do that, helping u pick a CPU will be very easy

I don't think that it will be worth upgrading a CPU for you when you will hardly have any OC options available to you. This mobo is not too OC friendly, and although its possible to OC with it I wouldn't recommend it much, also AFAIK on that mobo the SSE of the TbredB AthlonXP will not function.

I recommend you first get a good overclocking friendly mobo, like the Abit NF-7(S) or the ASUS A7N8X...

Ok I will look into getting one, but for now, how far do you think I can go with my current setup. I'll tell you CPU Speed Choices I've got now if that will help!

147mhz fsb is the most likely max with your board, mening 1.61ghz (147x11) is all your gonna get withouth modded the cpu or board. 150mhz fsb would get you 1.65ghz.

remember that an xp1700+ doesn't run at 1.7ghz, it runs at 133mhz fsb x 11 - 1463mhz. Also note that you can not change the multiplier with that board without modding - so you'll be stuck with a multiplier of 11

Here are the choices i've got,

100/100
112/112
124/124
110/110
100/133
133/100
110/147
133/166
133/133
138/138
150/150
166/166
B H/W Trap
143/143
147/147
200/200

That's all of them!

read my recommendations...
Abit NF-7S for best overclocker (the NF-7 if you don't need the fancy onboard sound, will cost less too)
or the ASUS A7N8X for cost effectiveness

if you don't mind single channel memory, the asus board in my sig is really oc friendly, and supports 400mhz fsb.
