i was thinking. wouldn't it be better if pande group made a version of the client that took a higher priority? i mean there's got to be a considerable amount of work being done by people with machines that do nothing but fold. that being the case wouldn't it be advantageous to make a client that ran with a normal priority. would that even speed things up?
the client is made to not interfere with people's systems as it because the idea was to help while not bothering your day to day business. so there had to have been measures taken to slow the process down or something that would make the process slower so it wouldn't hog to many resources.
theoretically the client uses ALL cpu resources not being used by the system and user applications... it'd be interfering if it did any more than that.

I don't think it would really make a noticable difference. Farm machines don't really use any CPU time anyways. Maybe a second or two per WU :p
You can manually turn the thread priority up in an NT based system. If you run it too high, the computer becomes totally unusable.

interference wouldn't matter though because all these machines would do it fold anyways. so would allowing the program to interfere allow it to work any faster?
No, it would just allow it to not accomplish anything else.

The Tinker And Gromacs Core have both been programmed to use idle cpu cycles in the thread code. so even if you turn the priority up it won't use anymore cpu power than what you have available at that present moment.
it will however, slow you machine down 10fold and devote most resources to folding which the core does not actually use!
Seti@Home has a different system and is more effective in terms of cpu usage, but folding cores are designed to only use idle cpu cycles.
Hope this makes some sense to ya!

makes sense but i wasn't asking bout using task manager to crank up the priority. i was just thinking of ways to crank out production so maybe i can see some really worthwhile results from this project in my life time.
honestly the idea of being able to learn something that could have such a tremendous effect really excites me. i'm just trying to figure ways to speed up the project.

Fold on.
If you have SSE enabled processors use the -advmethods
and -forceasm flags to allow the client to utilise this. There's a good thread on this I believe its a sticky.
This gives you a good power increase!
I scoure the classifieds daily for deals, if anyone ever wants to sell stuff, but would be willing to discount if they know it'll stay folding, lemme know ;)
