My friend (no I'm not in denial) just got a new case (mid tower ATX), new motherboard (PC CHIPS M810LR 8 - 64MB Shared Memory off the top of the RAM) and new CPU (Duron 750)
We got everything running (despite being green) we used the hard drive from his previous computer along with the RAM and CDROM drive.
Now he installed Half-Life and when he goes to play it totally locks at a black screen when you click on "new game" (Cntrl-Alt-Dlt won't even work). It also does the same thing for The Sims (which was already on the hard drive) total lock up. So I installed my vid card to see if it'd change anything. My card is a Hercules GeForce2 MX and it still does the same thing. Locks up as soon as you press "new game" or "create game". Any advice? 'Cause I'm REALLY stumped. Sorry if I chose the wrong topic to place this under....

I checked and made sure there were no conflicts with video drivers but it did this even before I installed my MX. So I don't know.

Thanks in advance.

Thats the reason....shared memory. Turn off the shared memory and make sure that the onboard video is disabled. That should do you..

i thought the shared memory WAS off
and like i said...i tried it BEFORE i ever thought about putting in my MX
shouldn't half-life run with shared memory? i know not WELL but should't it run?
it didn't so i said "i wonder what'll happen if i shut off your shared memory and put in my MX" and got the same thing

you said that the sims was already on the hdd... sounds silly, but did you reinstall windows when moving the hdd to the new mobo? a lot of people don't do it, and then run into terrible problems because of old chipset fighting with the new chipset.

don't panic... why can't he back his important stuff up on your machine?

but anyway, you often don't need to format the hdd... just boot off a floppy and run windows setup... it'll just refresh all the files it has to from there. although i have had this bomb on me before when going from an old lx chipset to a kt133 chipset, and lost everything on the hdd. but i do it on my board every now and then just to help windows keep itself tidy.

it'd be best to back up everything and start from scratch, but you can try the above method.

it might not be this at all, but it's always best to start with a clean windows when going to a new machine. but wait a bit for other suggestions.. maybe someone else has had the same problem and sorted it out differently.
