View Full Version : 2mbit up and downstream, good for a game server?

For quite a while, I've had my nose on setting up a dedicated games-server..

But really, I know nothing of running such servers, as I have always settled with playing myself.

Since I went nuts on UT and UT2003, I have however considered setting up a dedicated server, for e.g. UT2K3, or other FPS games.

What seems to be to be the biggest bottleneck, is bandwidth. I have a 2mbit two-way line at my disposal, so it shoul do, orrrr?

As for hardware... who knows.. some kinda odd duallie in the high spec P3 series, around 1.133 ghz.

Lemme know..

2048/2048 should be pretty good for a game server, depending on what game and how many players. For a game server I would suggest that you make a large amount of RAM and fast storage a priority.

I should have 2 gigs of ram for it... the real trick will be getting the duallie board.

The games will most likely be FPS, as their server software is more available than that of many other games.

How many games and players could I cover with a 2/2 mbit line? (not taking other HW specs into account)

Assume that each player uses 56kbits (if its playable on dialup) so realistically you should be able to run 16 player games easily.

i can get about 6 people, on my half-life server

with 256/256kbit

wouldn't just a fast single processor system be enough? like an amd at around 2-24 ghz be enough?

Hmmmm.. not really the specs I wanted to see.. I'll have to wait for the double bandwidth then...

My main goal would be to set up 2-3 different games, for people at our business to use. Probably audience is around 30-40 people, maybe running 2 or 3 different games.

That sounds good. We hosted cs servers on a 3down/ 128kb up with low ping. Just make sure that they (isp) actually specify that you can use the service for hosting games. Ours wouldn't, and told us to stop or we'd lose service.

if your running multiple games you should probably get dual cpu

And if its for the business, perhaps setting the server up at the office on a LAN would be a better solution. Your overtime bills might skyrocket though....heh

Its a corporate line, we can use it for whatever we like, as long it is not used for illegal software distribution or advertising for such programs.

As most people will be gaming during evenings and weekends, the LAN solution is not an option. Furthermore, connecting it to the LAN AND WAN would jeopardize network security.... too many funky hacks for network games these days.

I was running a dual gametype UT server off of a 355k up line. I ran a DM server and a CTF server from the same box using different IP's. I would say your max depending on what you set netspeed to would be over 50 running classic UT, you would probably have to run several servers doing UT though to get there.

Very good site on how to configure a UT server.

Good site for adminning a server as well as UT2003 server setup's

UT2003 has a 32 player limit, you could get by with running one server and using a MapVote mutator to allow them to change the gametype to suit what they want to play as a UT2003 server is quite hardware intensive. I hope this helps you a little bit as it has been a while since I have run a UT server but I ran ours for over a year. http://ocutserver.sytes.net/

Cheers to you!

One more quick tip for you is, netspeed is key, setting netspeed properly relates to how loaded you can make a server, those tutorials I gave you will get you there. If you need anything else let me know as I will help you the best I can, I admin the [OCG] UT2003 server with the staff there and we have it working pretty well.

For UT2003 you need powerful hardware even for a 1-game 10 player server.

well ut2k3 does take up about 95% or so of cpu cycles, but I think it would be fine as long as you have alot of ram and you arent playing on it yourself.
