Is this possible?

Both machines are running XP Pro and and one has a internal DSL modem so a router is not possible.

I know this will work with internet connection sharing with a cross connect cable but has anyone achieved this with wireless nics?

It should be no different.

The medium does not matter, whether you are sharing it over ethernet, wireless, fiber, coax, etc. Should all be the same.

Good, the thing I am wondering is if there is a switch on the wireless NIC that switches it into cross connect mode or if it is in done in software?

You will need to change the wireless mode:
Ad-Hoc
Infrastructure

Infrastructure = connect & associate to a wireless access point
Ad-Hoc = connect peer to peer (like a crossover).

If you can't find it anywhere in the software, it should be in your NIC's advanced properties (in device manager).

I'm probably going to be doing this in the near future for a friend. I will let you know how it works out.

Curse the internal DSL modems!

Can you put a card into hostap mode under Winxp?

I only just started using a router and access point with an 802.11(b) wireless network when I switched from DSL to Cable for broadband. While on DSL I used the Ad-Hoc Peer-to-Peer setting and internet sharing and had no real problems to speak of in sharing my internet connection. When I went to Cable I switched to a Wireless Router so my kids and wife could still access the net, even if my computer, the main one, was turned off.
