Since my duron 700 died (unfortunately chipped), I'm planing to buy a gig proc but i don't want to mess around with the conductive paint cos i don't know how to remove it so i was wondering if aal gig AXIA's are factory unlocked.

there is a very good chance you can get a 1.13 chip for very little less money, it will most likely be a unlocked axia, the 1.13 would be your best bet

Only the highest speed AMD cpus are 100% unlocked. Any other speed is a gamble, moreover if it's unlocked, it may be an older less potent (non-AXIA) stepping.

Although my first CPU was not factory unlocked. I brought it of a dealer that sells overclocked CPU's guanteed to run at a specified higher speed, perhaps it might be worth investigating this in your area and thus saving the lead in your pencil
( www.overclockers.co.uk sells unlocked CPU's )

I don't know AMD's thinking on this but I have an AXIA1300 that was locked and an AXIA1.2 that came unlocked. My older AXHA1.2 is locked.

Don't sweat it if you end up with a locked cpu. A defroster kit is about the best way to go. I have done over a dozen this way and have had no problems. If you want to remove the paint alcohol and a q-tip will work.

My 1.2-266fsb was unlocked, but DOA. I just got the replacement, a 1.333-266 AXIA today and it is locked. A conductive pen has been ordered.
I do not know what the "trend" is with them, maybe we should ask the guys who maintain the CPU database to add a field for locked status.
