View Full Version : Duron ??
What is the best choice for overclocking duron/athlon vs intel cpu's ? When you read topics it always seems like adm cpus are more oc friendly, is it so and if why ? Why I'm asking is that I've only owned intel cpus....

days of old amd was extremely hot and oc'able but with limited resources to cool them effectively. Now there's more effective cooling. They are far better for overclocking.
Intel is as always faster and more reliable. =)

amds are great for overclocking. The speeds are about the same, although people don't kill their intel cpus as easily as they do AMDs. They are both great, just go with whatever you want to.

Because the Intels cost too dang much. I'd be a little ******ed if I smoked one of them.

i like athlon cause you can unlock the multiplier
Yes like others said...
1/ Cheaper and more fun with AMD
2/ Duron/Tbird have better performance than Celeron/P III;
especially when compared Celeron and Duron.
3/ AMD CPU is More flexible with both FSB and
multiplier(with pencil trick) While the Intel CPU has dead lock
on Multiplier.
4/ However, The beauty of Intel CPU is you can have SMP machine
running those cheap and wonderful Celeron 1 or Pentium II, Pentium III...
while this option is not available with AMP CPU, at least till now.
;-) ;-) ;-)
Shadow says that intel is more reliable, that I know/heard about AMD in old days is that they where very unstable and wasnt that very good choice for gaming for example. How are they today ?

not saying AMD is completely unstable........just less stable than an Intel....but that's not saying much as I see BSOD's on my Intel probablyl 9/10ths as much as AMD's.

My overclocked Duron (700@866 for now) has gone 2 full months with nary a program crash or BSOD. It'll run for days without needing to be restart. The only things I restarted it for are when I install new progies and nee to restart to use them.

duron 750 can goto 1Ghz for 42dollars. to give you an idea of gaming performace with this chip playing UT with a V3 2000PCI I get 45fps average on most CTF levels(1024x768)high world high models!!!!
running win2k server for 1 week at 800 and one hang up with a driver install. NO BSOD YET!!!!

AMD is as stable if not more stable than Intel. If you OC AMD is far more stable IMHO. See you don't need to crank the FSB up to achive higher MHz like Intel makes you. Seen a friend have to reload windows (EVERYTHING) cause he raised the FSB one point too high and the funny thing was he did this 3 times before he got the extra 100MHz out of a 600E (he's at 700 now). When you overclock and you raise the FSB you run alot of stuff too fast so it becomes unstable and thats where the problem lies. I have a Duron 700@1030 super stable and it can do 1050 on a good day so I just hang with 1030. I would say though that today I'd get a TBird over a Duron cause the price is so low on TBirds...
Good Luck

This may be a tad OT, but the best thing that you can do prior to an overclocking attempt is to educate yourself as thoroughly as possible.
Knowing much of what you'll be getting into prepares you for the inevitable BSODs, lock-ups and other such nasties. Absorb as much information as you can, and you'll be more apt to sail right through, or perhaps even avoid many of the potential pitfalls any overclocker faces.

Both platforms are far more stable then the Microsoft OS that is running on them. I have run Linux for extended periods of time on both with great results. My personal best was with an old P200 which ran linux for over 8 months without even a reboot! And I took it down for a hardware upgrade it never crashed.
Thanx all for nice answers ! and MegaHurtz, yes im reading the **** of my self about oc, my friends think i got some oc paranoia or something ! oc is damn fun, interesting but first of all it has to be stable and cool ive learn and tons of other stuff thanx to you guys.
