Hey guys, what would be a good board to go with a P4?I'll be looking to OC it as well.I really don't understand much about Mobo's, so if you could explain to me why use the mobo that you suggest.
cheers:Goli

What P4 are you planing on buying/doing and what is your budget?
personly I would go with something from ABIT...
but as i dont know what you need feature wise, hard to give a recomendation

The cheapest P4.I maybe can squeeze $250-$300 CND. from my wife.
A slot-T adapter would work for me though, would it not?Maybe this is a better way to go for budget wise. How much would I be looking at with a Slot-T adapter?I've seen the adapter going for $30-$40, but could my system take it?
On a side note:
Yeah those fires are pretty intense up in Kelowna eh Jay?

i have been in New Brunswich away with the Army all summer...
had no idea how bad the fires actually were untill i got home, over 900 were burning, very scarry....
some time next week they (6 Field its on Forbes and 16th N Van) are most likly going to be sending some more people down, and that would be me
As for your computer, yeah it supports a tualatin with a slot-t adapter... using one now from upgradeware and it works great, cost about $40 with shipping and tax i think (from Ontario)...
If you have a coppermine adapter, you can always mod the CPU and adapter to work, but if you are not 100% comfortable with doing that, the adapter is a really good route to take. I did the adapter mod, and still bought the slot-t adapter.
The Tualatin Celeron is $65 for the 1.1A and 1.2, $69 for the 1.3, so very cheap... and it will be a nice upgrade from your P!!! 450..
Plus easy on the pocket book keeping the wife happy.
I think that would be the best route for you to take since you have a tight budget. And if you go the P4 route, a New MB, CPU, RAM is needed, posibly a new PSU and heatsink. that will be very hard to do for under $300 unless you plan on buying all used stuff.

Yeah I know right where that is, I used to live on 14th and forbes and play on that old gun that was there.Ahhh the memories.
Do you know of a web site that explains the adapter/tualatin set up/install?The idea of this is sort of new to me.

Not much to understand...
Buy the adapter/CPU..
install the tualatin into the adapter like you would install any ziff socket CPU.
then slide the Slot-t adapter into your slot 1 motherboard like how you would install your current 450.
http://www.upgradeware.com/english/product/slott/setup.htm
has all details thier (and pics) but like i said, they really isnt much too it

How ironic, I just finish reading that web page.Detailed nicely.I thought that's how it was done, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for help Jay.I talked to my wife and she's OK with it, now just to find it here on the North Shore somewhere.

Hehehehe. If I may make a suggestion to save even more money, you might want to try looking for E-companies who carry the stuff you need. Internet-based companies are generally able to sell things for MUCH less(including shipping, the difference is sometimes rather incredible). This is due to the lack of overhead that E-companies have. Overhead, for those who are new to the business world, is a term used to describe any/all expenses generated by work-related resources, such as employee wages, electric bills, and so on. Overhead excludes the actual cost of the board, however.
By doing a little research, I found out just how extreme this difference is. In retail outlets, the lowest price I found for my GA-8IK1100 mobo was 179.99USD. However, when shipping was added in, I was able to get the exact same board(which I later fried because of a generic PSU) for only 140.17. Without the same day air mail shipping, it was only 121.99.
Ebay is also an excellent place to get components, as I've posted before. I got my Xazer II case for 40 bucks. Talk about a deal. And, you don't even have to worry about the reliability as long as the seller has good feedback.
Now, a question to the O.G. members here:
Any of you have any experience with the above mobo? It seems pretty good to me so far. I don't know how high I can pump the fps of my 2.4c, but is 355x4 lower than others, or is it about the same?

Yeah that's great Jay, thanks. Now just the decision on what Ghz to get the Tualy at.I'm guessing I should get a new heatsink and fan instead of using the one I got now(stock).
Edit:
My PSU is also only 250W, you think maybe I should get atleast a 300W?Oh yeah and maybe you could direct me to a purchase site for the Tualatin chip(besides E-bay).
Cheers:beer:

You planing on overclocking this CPU?
1.1A is the sure thing, 1.2 is a little risky, 1.3, well good luck with that..
I pretty much order all my parts here
http://elitech3.tmts.ca/
as they let me hand pick my parts, and price match...
So grab a computer paper, find the cheapest store and thier you go, your gona be getting a good deal.. I think thier is a shop on 16th and lonsdale, evergreen computers i think. They have the computer paper, so you can pick on up thier. Dont know if they let you hand pick parts or price match though... AS i dont buy from them, Elitech is my store (NCIX also sometimes).
As for your PSU.. 250 would be ok with only 1 HDD and not a power hungry video card. But if you do plan on setting some speed records, i would go with a better PSU.
Now as for the heatsink... Intel made the OEM heatsink bigger yet again, so i think if you are only trying for 133FSB (from 100) you should be ok with that sink as long as you are using Artic Silver. Lapping it wouldn't be a bad idea, and if you wanted to go all out, a fan pushing some more air couldnt hurt either.

Yeah you bet.I'll check it out tomorrow(as I'm on vaction this week)

My mobo goes up to 133FSB, but I've currently got it at 112FSB everything else, I have not changed. And is this Artic Silver you talk about a brand name of a Fan/Heatsink?Sorry for the stupidity, but I really want to do this right.

Artic Silver is thermal Paste, best stuff you can buy and last a long time.. only thing is its $12
http://www.arcticsilver.com/
All major computer stores sell it.
Well since your overclocking the 1.1A or 1.2 ...
The faster the stock speed, the luckier you have to be.
If your motherboard wont kick in the /4 PCI divider untill 133FSB IE you cant kick it in at 124 or when ever you want, the 1.1 is the safest bet.
One thing to rember is your RAM.. its no PC100 is it? as you will be needing some PC-133 to run at a 133FSB. Just something you are going to want to make sure of. As what fun would it be if your Ram held you back.
If your not sure what you have, look at the RAM, it should have a -7 or -75 for PC133 if it says -8 its PC100

Say what? they dont have any in stock? or cant get them?
I usally deal with the coquitlam store... but anyways, did you ask if they could order in a part for you?
I'd be more than happy to help with that/finding you a CPU, but i gota leave at 0600 on the 6th..
if you still havent got what you want when i get back, i'll help...
if not, call around to stores in the computer paper. you gota about 1 week to find the part as you still have to wait for the Slot-T adapter to arrive in the mail
Sir Golitech

OK, so lets see if I got this right...
Slot-T Conversion Kit/Slot1 to Socket 370
Tualatin Celeron 1.1GHz/256K Cache/100MHz FSB/Socket 370
Now is there a 1.1A GHz or is it just 1.1GHz?
did you ask if they could order in a part for you?
But would that not just cost me more than if I were to order from somewhere off the net and have it mailed to my house?
Lots of luck to you up in Kelowna.Keep alert.
Edit:
I just called Elitech over in Metrotown and they can't get the adapter or the CPU for me :(.They did offer to find me a second hand adapter for $15-$20, but no thanks I'd rather buy it new on-line.Now to find a place that might have the CPU.

sorry i want clear on this.
the Slot-T adapter has to be bought online in that store in toronto
you can find the adapter here
http://www.bytewizecomputers.com/products/7/9/104/1048
NO STORE in Vancouver to my knoldge carries the part.
As for the CPU... yes thier is a 1.1 and a 1.1A
the 1.1 is a Coppermine core, 128K L2 .18micron FCPGA
the 1.1A is a Tualatin Core, 256K L2, data prefetch .13micron FCPGA2
So make sure you get the 1.1A.
Tell them its the one with 256K L2 if they are not sure...
grrr looks like these CPU's are getting hard to find, NCIX doesnt have any either...
your gona have to call around of even try ebay/used
or try your luck with a 1.3 that the toronto store has
Sir Golitech
