Posted this to someone else asking about RMA experience but felt AMD Tech Service Center deserved a fresh topic.
I had crushed my TB900 trying to get the HSF off. Called them up (408) 749-3060. Got right through. Explained what I had done, blamed the tight clip. They said just use the standard HSF and temperature doesn't much matter below 80C. I said, OK, I'll be a good boy from now on.
The important piece of information needed for an RMA is the number on the FAN, not the CPU. Gave them that, faxed my sales receipt. Got an RMA number and an email telling me where to ship the CPU. I sent the cpu by ground (I already replaced it with a 1.2). Took a week to get there. Then I got a call telling me that I had to send the FAN ALSO! I explained that the email just said the CPU so that is what I sent. So I sent the fan. Ground.
Yesterday Alex called up to say that he received the fan and asked why the fan was missing a wire (I had used it to try to wire the RPM monitor while using a 4 pin molex connector). I explained. He was just curious. Said he would include a new fan. I said thank you. It all arrived today.
The service I got from AMD Tech Service Center was excellent. It only took two weeks because I was cheap about shipping the fan with the cpu and sent everything ground cause I was in no hurry. They sent it overnight.
The only disappointment is that they did only send a 900 and that it is AGGA. But hey, still pretty good.
Oh, I did use flux remover to clean the chip up before sending it back.
