yah, k6-2's didnt o/c well. your almost garentied a GHz off a duron 800. make sure ya' get an iwill/epox/abit mobo though so you know you'll get a good o/c out a 'er.

Yeah, my second system is virtually identical to yours. I replaced the old K6-2 hsf with a much chunkier coolermaster one. That allowed me to overclock the fsb to 105 but i'm definately gonna have to get an alpha or some homemade **** to get to 110.

K6-2's do overclock but the increase in speed is hardly worth it for the amount of effort you have to put in to cool your cpu. I would agree with the other guy and say put up with it or go for a duron system.

K6-2 450 @ 472 (105x4.5) (Coolermaster cpu fan)
Gigabyte GA-5AA Mobo
Creative GeForce 32Mb Annihilator Pro (6.31 drivers)
128Mb PC133 Generic SDRAM (1x128Mb 2-3-3)
17Gb 5,200rpm Fijitsu HDD
52x Creative CD-ROM
Creative AWE64 Gold
3Com 10/100 Network Card
230w generic power supply
System fan, open case
Temperature is very hot after an hour or so of Quake3

You're never going to get wallshaking performance or overclockability on a K6-2.... I had a 500 on a Epox MVP3G2 for a few months and it took enormous amounts of voltage through the core to get it to 560. A duron system is what I upgraded to (D700 on a KT7A-R, oc'ed as high as 954). I am certainly pleased, but as we sit poised on the brink of Palomino and DDR, I can't help but think what could have been if I had been able to stretch my old system out a little longer. For now, I would say do everything you can to get that K6-2 performing good (PC100 memory is dang cheap anyway... just get some good generic stuff and hop it up to 256+ MB of memory). OC it as far as you can, and save your $$$ for Palo. That's my advice.
