My mom got trojaned somehow (she answers all her emails) or maybe just got hacked, I dont know what happened. But to be brief her os lost a system file and it could not load. She was running XP pro, I formated the drive, tried running win 98 setup, but when it got to the point of copying the files for setup to install, it would just stay at that blank dos screen with just those words there. I formated the drive and ran os installs on the drive, works fine on this pc, but not on hers. Im thinking the board just crapped out, I simply cannot get the os back on, im going to try a bios flash, but if it simply dosent work, does it mean that my board crapped out?

If I cant fix this pc she will just use mine, and ill have to part the old one out and make her a new one out of my own pocket, and im low on funds, and I fear she will virus this one too :(.

Try getting older version of Windows on there like Windows 95 and see if it installs. You should invest in Norton System Works. It will check for viruses if updated properly and It's supposed to be a firewall to.

try reinstalling XP pro. Also, did you try deleting and recreating the partitions before you formatted? If still nothing, I'd start from extreme scratch. Reset the CMOS, delete and recreate the partition, then reinstall the OS....if that doesnt work...then I don't know.
