I purchased a 1.33GHZ T-bird w/ 266 fsb. I have 256 mb crucial pc2100 memory and an iwill KA266-r motherboard. I'm running a voodoo 5 5500 agp card, and maxtor diamondmax 40 gig 7200rpm hdd.
I installed all the components correctly, and then I put on the HSF. I used arctic silver 2 goop. When I put on the HSF it took a ton of pressure to get the clip on(is that normal?). When I finally did get it on, I tryed my first boot, and received no post at all. No errors, or beeps. No output on screen. But when it tryed to start it made a weird soound like it was checking the HD.
My first assumption was that the agp card wasn't seated right or the cable was loose, but they were in good. Then I checked every connector in the case. My next assumption was that it was the power supply was too weak(300watt antec). So I disconnected all the fans and everything non-essential to boot. Then pressed the button again, but to no avail. I reseated the ram next.(it is compatible with the board and proc) So next I cleared the cmos. That didn't work either. So, to the best of my knowledge I have narrowed it down to 3 options. I either crushed the cpu when I installed the HSF(how would I be able to tell?), the video card is bad(brand new though), or I have a bad mainboard(also brand new). something else, I got a little goop on the silicon part of the proc, and cleaned it up as best as I could with a cotton swab, and some alcohol. Would that be a factor? I got it almost all off except this little residue. It did touch the bridges, but i can still see the break in the ones that aren't connected, so I don't think thats it. I cleaned up all goop and reapplied it. then reseated HSF again. I am open for suggestions, and would appreciate a fix short of sending back the proc. Please help.

I hope the chip is ok. The first thing to do is test each of the suspected parts by themselves in a known working system. That will eliminate everything but the bad part. I sincerely hope that there isn't another dead bird to add to the list we have going here currently at about 18 or so.
If you don't have a known working system to test with you could take them to a local computer shop[ and they will usually test things for a few bucks.

Might as well make it 19. I left my computer on, as normal when I left work work. Came home, screen was black, no boot, no post on a reset. Wonderful. Dead 1.33ghz T-bird. Got a new one, been workin like a champ ever since.

coolermaster for socket a, it has a clip that puts alot of tension on the die..(its pretty cheap) I didnt plan on overclocking til I got a better HSF. That was just temporary until I got the info on which one to get, not to mention the money to get it.
