I have several computers and a s***y dial-up connection for internet, I have it shared using windows xp pro ICS but it only works some of the time and it varies from computer to computer.

here goes:

Mediastation - this is the machine with the modem and ICS setup.
XP Pro SP1
> IP: 192.168.0.1
> SUB: 255.255.255.0
> Other: SPX/IPX and IPv6

BigL - this is my main machine, works with ICS some of the time, not currently!!!
XP Pro SP1a
> IP: 192.168.0.123
> SUB: 255.255.255.0
> Gateway: 192.168.0.1
> Other: SPX/IPX and IPv6

LapDog - this is my laptop with wireless network connection via an access point, usually the one with the problem using the internet, today no exception!!
XP Pro SP1
> IP: 192.168.0.11 (DHCP)
> SUB: 255.255.255.0
> Gateway: 192.168.0.1
> Other SPX/IPX and IPv6

ForSale - this is the machine I am currently typing on (I intend to sell, hense the name), sometimes works and is currently running fine (only one)!
XP Pro
> IP: 192.168.0.242 (DHCP)
> SUB: 255.255.255.0
> Gateway: 192.168.0.1
> Other: SPX/IPX

Current setup:

Hub 1 (5 port) : WAP, BigL, MediaStation, Uplink to Hub2, last currently unused.
Hub 2 (5 port): ForSale, Uplink to Hub 1, rest currently unused.

All computers can see and copy from any other computer

Up until two days ago they all seamed to access the internet fine, no change in the systems occured, simple turned some off one night and only one worked afterwards!!

Any Ideas??????????????????

Thanks :)

First, unless there is reason not to do so, I would remove IPX/SPX and and IPv6 support from all computers.

su root: the SPX/IPX is for Red Alert 2/Yuris Revenge games over networks, easiest way to assure that you will all be able to see each other, damn thing is a real pain otherwise. But IPv6 can go, but what is wrong with it anyway?

Thanks for your help :)

There's nothing wrong with IPv6, it's just that no-one is using it yet, and it's there for future availability. It's like TCP/IP, except it's the next generation.

For now, I would try removing/disabling IPX/SPX and IPv6. What could be happening is that the connection is somehow being shared over IPX or IPv6 instead of the regular IPv4.

Besides that, can computers ping the ICS machine even when they don't have internet access?

Fair enough, I thought that IPv6 was more optimized than IPv4 so I switched. :)

All computers can ping, see, share files and message each other, the can even tell that the internet connection I am sharing is connected, it just won't use the damn thing!

SPX/IPX has always been part of my network setup, and I still need it for RA2/Yuri, but i'll give IPv6 the heave ho and see if it make a difference! :-/

Thanks again :)

Damn it!!!!!

Just before I disabled IPv6 I thought I would give it one more try, and this time it worked, I still removed IPv6 from all machines, not that it helped much!!

Stupid XP pro being a arse again!! :o

try setting all the computers, apart from the host, to obtain an ip automatically, ive done the same as you, specified an IP and worked fine until restarted and they had vanished, but that sorted it out for me.
