look on MaximumPC's website. they had a sort of "benchmark" for the "what gfx card will give you what quality kinda thing" an issue or two ago. I would check valve's website though too. or google for it.

It really exists?

I cant find a benchmark as such but there are tools to see if you can run half life 2 by answering questions. Not as much fun as a proper benchmark. Im gonna keep looking though :D

edit .. beat by Bigdogbmx
yeah the actual tool. I am not sure of the release date. so if anyone knows of the release date let me know?

as far as the 'benchmarks' I do have an issue of maximum pc that has them in it, but they arent really benchmarks. Just a matter of them telling u what graphics cards will let you see what details. But they did say this, if you have a 9800pro or a 5900fx, you will see it how its meant to be.

In the test mine came up as "should be ok at 800x600" yay. 800x600 my favourite.

Wow... a 9600pro scoring around the same area as the 5900 ultra...
But what BIB really wants is a download to bench his system.
ATI didn't need these special optimizations to perform well and Valve insists that they have not optimized the game specifically for any vendor.
sure they didn't ... all the games i've played lately are either sporting mini-commercials for nvidia or ati.
i don't know about you guys, but i like advertising and stuff in the things i buy. pretty soon, the dvd's we buy will have commercials on them too... i can hardly wait :). advertising, spyware and no rights/privacy, the way of the future.

here's what the org.uk site said for me Results
Processor: Your processor is fine.
Graphics : You should be able to play in 1024x768 depending on your card, consider upgrading if you have an older chipset such as GeForce 3 Ti
System Memory: You have enough RAM
Operating System: You will be able to play on Win XP.
Architecture: No Problems
To address the original question in this thread the benchmark seems to be hard scheduled for September 30th.

I agree with you that I don't want ads in anything I have to pay for, and video card advertisements in games DO cause suspicion. However in this case I believe Valve did not do any optimization for R300 based cards. Read the hardocp article (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTE5) about the little presentation by Gabe from Valve. The gamers depot article linked by baqai above is okay but it does not go through the facts of the presentation in very much detail. Rather it seems to take enjoyment in saying little more than "HAHA Nvidia sucks and ATI rulz look at the HL2 benchies biatch!"
By the way, anybody that was participating in this thread (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=227712) all of the questions and speculations there have been answered by this new development.
It's been well known that ATI's 9xxx cards outperform NV30 based cards when it comes to PS and VS performance, which makes the big differences in these tests. This aspect of the R300 architecture was a strong selling point when the 9700pro was released and held true when the 5800 ultra showed up. It simply makes sense that the ATI cards outperform Nvidia cards in Half Life 2.

Pretty soon has been here for a long time. Everytime you see someone drinking a Coke in one of your dvds or driving a Ford, those companies paid for it. If you're older I'm sure you remeber when M&M (Mars or who ever) turned down the offer (for money) to be in E.T. instead of Reese Piece. I've been waiting to see Max Payne drinking a Bud or Zelda chewing Skull. Its just a metter of time before it happens in games. Not that I like it, but what are we going to do...nothing like we always do;)
Nvidia's response to the Game Newell presentation (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTIw)
Hmm it will be interesting to see what these detonator 50s can pull off.

Most of the stuff in their statement is basically their word vs Valve's that the DET50 drivers are good and while I am definitely more inclined to believe Valve , I could give them the benefit of the doubt . However thus far they have been unable to overcome the hardware limitations of the FX line using drivers up to this point except by cheating . But then some of their statements are amazing .
Now this is the rubbish quote here : " The optimal code path for ATI and NVIDIA GPUs is different - so trying to test them with the same code path will always disadvantage one or the other. The default settings for each game have been chosen by both the developers and NVIDIA in order to produce the best results for our consumers. "
Valve used the STANDARD DX9 Hlsl program ! They did not use some special ATI based super-optimised compiler . It is no persons fault but theirs that their hardware is so poor on default DX9 software . So while at face value this seems to make sense, with closer inpection it is very silly indeed .
Here is the second : " In addition to the developer efforts, our driver team has developed a next-generation automatic shader optimizer that vastly improves GeForce FX pixel shader performance across the board. The fruits of these efforts will be seen in our Rel.50 driver release." While not a silly statement , here we have another gamespecific optimisation which the game's developers disagree with . The real question is , will the output remain the same ? Will end users be able to choose to see the game as it is meant to be played , or like UT2003 as Nvidia would have you see it ??? Will these optimisations try to fool screencapture software like previous drivers as Valve mentioned , making high quality screenies from lower quality gameplay ? Or will the speed of these drivers primarily work the benchmark alone and not for the game ?
Well that stuff aside, I am willing to give Nvidia a break on this one. Judgement should be withheld until they are ready. As long as they are ready before the release of the game. I doubt det 50 will put them on top of ATI, but it might make the benchies look like less of a smackdown.
I'm all for game specific optimizations as long as it does not involve cheating or corner cutting. If Nvidia can write some specific code for HL2 to run better on their hardware then more power to them.
Here we go, not the release det 50s but det 50 nonetheless. UT2K3, X2, and 3DMark2003 ONLY. No HL2 benchies. The new drivers show a solid improvement especially at 1024x768.
http://www.amdmb.com/article-display.php?ArticleID=257
I found some real HL2 benchies (not done by valve) in an unlikely place just now. 45 rel dets though.

Actually what they said is DX9 cards, i.e. GeForce FX and Radeon 9xxx cards. The same article stated that even lowly DX6 cards will be able to run it, :)

No, I believe that it would be 3dfx's Voodoo 2 & Banshee, nVidia's Riva TNT, ATi's Rage 128, SiS's 6326, Matrox's G200, PowerVR's PVR250, and S3's Savage3D chipsets, :)
