View Full Version : My job has gone Nazi

I used to have the coolest job in the world @ an Online University. I will not say which one but we used to be able to take our calls and do our homework and surf the net all day.
Friday I went in and found out that they laid 50 people off. I do well at my job and my stats are always in line so I was one of the people that get to keep my job. 50 people out of 500 techs isn’t that much.
The reason why they said they laid them off was because our server system has become so stable that the other techs were simply not needed. That seems to be a good reason but now we have all sorts of rules on us.
We cannot surf the net unless it's a work approved site. (Intranet Sites)
We cannot do our homework.
We cannot have any reading materials of any kind.
Hmmm... this sucks.
Our student's give tech support a 98 percent approval rating. Our company turned a huge profit last year and we get dumped on.
I can't even go to overclockers.com while I am at work anymore............

Quit.
Who needs a job anyway! :D
Heh, my sentiments exactly. Although bills pilling up tends to make a person get a job. :(
sucks being un-employed though, find another job then give them the salute :D

Peter Gibbons: I don't like my job and I don't think I'll go anymore.
Joanna: You're just not gonna go?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Joanna: Won't you get fired?
Peter Gibbons: I don't know. But I really don't like it and, uh, I'm not gonna go.
Joanna: So you're gonna quit?
Peter Gibbons: Uh-uh. Not really. I'm just gonna stop going.

Its not worth it to stay with a job that abuses you.
Trust me, I know. I'm my bosses, well... Think of Jim and the Band Girl from American Pie 1.
I swear, all I'm waiting for his for him to scream " SAY MY NAME, B----!!!! "

I'd start looking for another job. Those rules are a little on the tight side.

It would be one thing if it had started out that way. But to suddenly become so strict is a little hard to take.
My previous job was so strict, I had to sign a paper stating that non work related internet use was grounds for dismissal! But you had to work so hard, it was hardly necessary. You simply didn't have time. It is the only job I've ever had where sweeping the floor was considered goofing off. In the 7 months I worked there, I wasn't late once. But I was just spot on time on the day of Daylight Savings. I was up an hour earlier than normal, I just wasn't with it. Even though I wasn't late, my boss gave me a stern warning that I should try to come in a few minutes early!
I'm much happier at the job I have now.

Yea I'm going to look for another job. The market is so bad in Phoenix though. There are people that work with me that have a MCSE and a BSIT. I am barely about to get my associates.
Why be so strict. We have a 98 percent approval rating from the students.
That’s about to go down the toilet!
They are trying to fix something that is not broken.
Check this out.
Over the past three years, the XXXXXX (NasdaqNM:XXXXX - News) has pulled off the rarest of feats: Its has stock skyrocketed, hitting an all-time high of $47.17 on May 12, despite the worst tech-stock bear market in history. xxxx , which also owns xxxx , the nation's largest private university, first floated XXXXX as a tracking stock in September, 2000 -- just months before the broader tech market cratered.
I Xed out the company because I do not want to talk bad about it in public and if you know please dont post it because the last thing I need is to get fired

well, you are the tech....
couldnt you just change the policies?
or you arent high enough?
There are a lot of ways to get around blocked surfing :)
Might want to check out some anti censorship sites.
Hmmm, you work at a big online University of Phoenix, I mean IN Phoenix. Which one could it possibly be? :) I say start by bringing the case to management. Get a bunch of guys together and say, "Hey, we find these rules unneccesarily restrictive, and we're not happy. We had a 98% approval before, and hurting morale with layoffs and unnecessary rules isn't going to make that number go up."
Then if they shrug you off, you know what to do.

well we are techs but there takes alot of techs to support a University. We have 450 Techs. so as you imagine, not that high on the food chain. Im sure the restrictions are not going to last that long because there is not much we can do other than twiddling our thumbs.

Apart from this forum being privately-run, I think you can whine behind a door that needs 997 posts to open :)
Un-X, you will feel better :D

lets get this straight.....
you work at a UNIVERSITY.......as a Tech support.......AT A UNIVERSITY......and yet......they still won't let you do your homework......AT THE UNIVERSITY ITSELF.....even though you already have a 98% approval rating!!!!!! those number are NOT going to get any higher......there will ALWAYS be a few people that will disagree......so counting them out.....you pretty much have 100% approval rating...
i find that stupid that you can't even do homework there....
And no books? what if you want to read up more about Tech...so you can do your job better? uh...huh the people that made these rules really had their heads up in their own butts.....

Give it a some time to see if they actually enforce / keep the new rules. I am in a similar situation and we also have the same rules + no drinks on the floor and right now I am at work on my laptop drinking my Gatorade so just give it a few ;)

Update 9/11/03
They changed our homepage from msn.com to the companies intranet homepage to prevent unauthorized surfing
I put in a request with my supervisor to have oc-forums as an approved site because it promotes learning and I got the following response via email
"It has been rejected for now so please discontinue going there.
Sorry about that.
Thanks,"
**** that stupid ass mother****er that had to **** this job up now it ****ing sucks and there are not ****ing any other tech jobs in this ****ty city!!!!!!!!!

um......i wish I could draw that well in mspaint!! lol
anyway, what's a university job if they don't let you do homework?!?!
I can understand if you're a diswasher or janitor, but cushy desk jobs are MADE for homework.
Maybe you can get all the other techs to tell the boss that you have to quit because now that you can't do homework during your idle work time, you are falling behind in your classes. :D:D
Or, just ask them what they're trying to accomplish by not allowing you to use your idle time productively. Or, just keep pestering your supervisor with questions like "My phone hasn't rung for an hour, are there any chores that you need me to do?"
and keep asking. over and over and over. If you're lucky, they'll have you shuffle some paperwork or at least do SOMETHING to keep you busy. But if you're even luckier, your supervisor will get mad that you keep asking, then complain about the policy, and the policy will be lifted. Or your supervisor will disobey the policy and let you do homework, or at least read a book, hehehe.

It was only done in MS Word. No paint. :)
The policy is here for at least the next 90 days. It was due to being overstaffed and us not looking busy enough, we look evenb less busy now talking.
If it's so horrible to have to sit and do nothing while getting paid, quit. Otherwise, be happy that you weren't laid off.

Sounds like someone needs a 450-person deathmatch.
If you're really bored, you could always manufacture a problem or two on a fellow tech's computer, just to keep things interesting.
