When I installed the new omega drivers, I noticed that there was a 9700<9800 mod. What does this do? My friend has a 9700 and he installed it, but it still registers as a 9700.

it used to be just a driver optimization but now its included in latests catalists (since 3.2 I think) so dont worry about it you already have it
