okay, been runnig my new setup for only a week. I flushed the rad and leak tested for 24 hours then refilled with deionised water only and a very small amount of purple ice.
A week later theres this milky grey/brown coating on all the tubes and at the end of the pipes, in the res and also in the whitewater block its collected as a thick residue ? Anyone know what this is and how i can remove it ? Can i run the system with any additives for a bit to clean it up ? Or is it a full replacement of all tubing and a case of cleaning the waterblocks by hand ?
here are some pics, any help appreciated:

I so hope that's not from the Purple Ice. That's what I'm using now.
I don't know if this applys

Water wetter and zerex leave a very thin white layer of funk on tubes but that blue stiff in your res is way beyond anything they leave.
That stuff looks a little thicker than what they leave so I'm not sure what to tell you. Are you sure you had enough anti-growth and corosive fluids? Maybe you grew some creepies in there.
Whatever it is I would replace the tubes and clean all that out as good as you can just for safety.

Sigh:mad:
That "BLUE" stuff in his res is a SPONGE! for helping to control air bubbles...
He simply posted a pic of his res to show us what the WHITE (or milky grey/brown, as he stated in his post) stuff looked like..

i'd just throw some anti-freeze in there, nice and toxic. that is of cource if tht stuff in there is alge and the like... i always thought purple ice was formulated to stop bacteria and fungi though.

I had anti-freeze in my system and I still got it. Perhaps its a resistant strain of bacteria?

You have a sponge in your res? Never heard of that before, wouldn't it add some kind of outside thing into the water causing possible growth or other problems?
TheWiz, I don't think posting like that helped anything. Also, the second quote of mine you used is my statement directly relating to the white stuff not the sponge.
rar, same things with my tubing
except that i just ran distilled water with no additives
i just took a toothbrush and brushed alll that crap out :OP
I'm posting in this thread for two reasons.
1) I'd like to hear from someone with an informed opinion what the filmy/coating stuff is myself (I've got it too and I'm using DEX-COOL).
2) I'd like to remind everyone that we all agreed to play nice and be respectful of one another on these forums. Just to make sure this doesn't turn into an argument.
Thanks. :)

Could it be a flux residue from when the radiator was built? They came up with some great cleaning methods in that link I posted.

some anti freezes and anti corosives have wax binders or other binders that can solidify ( motor oil for some brands also has this problem)
its not generaly dangeruos but in a water cooling system to much of it will coat the cooling parts which is bad . may even clog up the block for a cascade BUT its genrealy not that bad. clean the system as best you can and use distilled water and maybe 1/4th of what you used before for your additives and you might not have a problem .

ok chaps,
its not the purple ice cos i ran another system with this and it was fine
i realised that this happened after i tried adding a new radiator which i didnt flush or test run at all. On teh barbs on this new rad i also added a little AtmosSeal on teh threads which is a plumbers sealant. So the residue is either:
1) this AtmosSeal stuff leaked off the barbs into the rad (but strange and unlikely 'cos its a water sealant and i tried putting some in a glass and as you would expect it wouldnt mix with teh water and also theres far too much gunk in my system to come form this)
2) something that was in this new rad already (i didnt flush it)
im going to take my WW apart and clean it ... is this diffiult ? Any tips ?
cheers
Rich
