This is long, but I need help plz. I need to get a new HSF. I got an iwill ka266-r mobo, w/ a t-bird 1.33GHz/266fsb, and 256MB of crucial pc2100ram(how do I figure what cas my ram is) and a voodoo 5 5500 agp. I bought a POS! coolermaster fan, and the retention clip was bad. It put so much pressure on the die that I think it crushed it, because I cant get any output on the monitor. I changed the grafx card for 8 megs of agp, but still no output. It will start post, but no uotput or beep. I cleared the CMOS, and put everything to default, and then after that didn't work to the lowest settings(fsb, multiplier, etc...)The fans r spinning, and it gets to a point where it makes this constant buzzing sound til I turn it off, sounds like it gets to the HDD and flops...So thats why I think I crushed the die. So I've eliminated most of the possibilities except maybe its a bad board. So I'm sending it back to newegg for a new one. And they even said they'd upgrade my shipping to 2nd day air(I told em' it was DOA. This leaves the fact that I need to get a new hsf so that history doesn't repeat itself. I'm open to any suggestions on anything I missed when troubleshooting(i really dont wanna send it back if I dont have to), otherwise, what is a good HSF to get that wont break the bank. I like the swiftech MC462A but that is really expensive for a HSF. Also, please give me some good sites to dl mobo monitor5, sisoft, and 3dmark2k1, as well as the HSF u recommend. I know this was lengthy, but I really appreciate any suggestions, or help you give me.(P.S. how can u get AS2 off the cpu? gotta clean it up b4 I send it back)

Sorry bout the T'Bird...a moment of silence for another dead Athlon.............
Yeah, you definitely crushed it. From my experience, this is exactly what happens when a processor fails to function. No video light first. Next, the CD-ROM usually tries to spool up. You hear the hard drive grind a little and after that it's all over. If you don't have a whole lot of experience mounting HSF units, then by all means steer clear of both GlobalWins and Thermaltakes. On some boards, an Orb will not line up quite right with the clips on the socket mounting ; GlobalWins are great coolers but they kick your finger's ass while trying to mount them - I was without feeling on the tip of my right thumb for two weeks after unmounting and remounting one on my brother's PC several times (youch!).
I got SiSoft off Downloads.com - it's slow but always available. 3DMark 2001 is readily available in both demo and full purchase form on www.madonion.com.
I'd like to know the ArcticSilver thing myself - I gotta get me some, but like in any Hardware Geek's PC, nothing is permanent ;)
Sorry for your loss and it's not like it was a $35.00 Duron either. I hate the HSF clip system. It is definitely the "Achilles Heel" in almost every HSF design. The best medicine is to recover financially and get another one ASAP. Just like relationships, as long as you remember your bad experiences so as to not repeat them.

I probably sound like I work for these guys but www.coolerchips.com has great deals and the service was good too! If you are going to use a globalwin HSF use needle nose pliers and you won't hurt yourself. but still be careful.
RIP :'(
I use floppy diskette 3.5" to set or remove cooler. Very convenient device. Can detach cooler in one second without using any excessive force.

My opinion for the future, they should convert the HSF mouting procedure to 2 screws on each side that go into the board. It would be as tight(if not tighter) and people would kill alot less CPU's. Well that's my 2 cents :)
