Just a quick note, Athlons new processor is now Officially named the Athlon 4. The new processor (Palomino) will be available soon, and AS USUAL will beat Intel in the rush to be incorperated into notebooks. Systems for notebooks will be available in May.

Just thought I'd pass the news along.

Run-em Cool.

we were debating the name is maxpc forums , why the athlon 4? why not athlon 2? pentium 4 athlon 4 , maybe they did it to look like the same thing as a pentium four so people will think its cool because its intel and they wont know the difference...

Here is a link that may better explain the reasoning fr the name, I think part of it is that they want people that arent too familiar with pc's to see the Pent 4 and Athlon 4 side by side, and not think that the Pent is better. ??? Ya really got me.

They should have named it Athlon 5, just to 1-up Intel.!!!

I think that AMD's Madison Avenue types could have come up with something better than 'Athlon 4' if it indeed turns out that is what moniker Palomino will hit the street with..They(AMD's marketing team) could have picked a more 'robust' sounding name, while retaining the Athlon's lineage...remember "AMD Athlon with Performance Enhancing Cache"..AKA Thunderbird..that just rolled right off the tongue.

I don't know, it's late, and I'm tired. You'd think these guys could easily do something more..or perhaps they will with the introduction of 'Barton'..Let's hope so.

Nothing new here. The software industry goes through the same version # wars also. Didn't think this mentality would creep into the hardware market though. Kind of funny I think.

A more interesting point is that the new Athlon is supposed to have direct support for the Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD v2) or SSE2 multimedia instruction set also found in the Pentium 4 which obviously means that this will become the multimedia standard set.. which then brings the question.. What is the future for 3D Now ?
