If I can unlock the multipliers on my t-bird why would I want to unlock the multiplier on my motherboard?

Duh! You don't unlock them on the MOBO, you change the ratio at which your FSB operates.

You re-connect the L1 bridges to unlock your T-Bird & then set the multipler via the m/b or BIOS...
but apparently on my motherboard there's a mod that installs dip switches to change the multipliers (see http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_a7m266_mod/) ? Plus I can join the bridges on the cpu to unlock its multiplier? In other words, is this only an alternative to joining the l1 bridges?

Closing the L1 bridges on the processor allows you to change the multiplier. The multiplier is accually part of the motherboard. The dips and jumpers on the mobo are what you use to change the the multiplier if your BIOS does not have the option to change it. If you do not close the L1s and try to change the multiplier it will either not boot or revert to the default multiplier.
