View Full Version : Water Chiller plans?
Does anyone have plans or a guide to building a water chiller? I understand the basic concept of it or it being like a mini freezer, i'd like to look into it and see how much it might cost to do.
If anyone has a link to a building guide or something that would be great!

I dont think there are anyguides around, but just ask me some questions and ill try to answere them. The cost would be
1.Fridge (depends i got mine for free but $50-100) I would reccomend a water chiller on ebay though, something from Neslab, Or Haake
2. Pump (around $45 for a nice one)
3.Res inside fridge (i used a trashcan)
4. A lot of miss accesories Dielectric grease, silicone, fittings, cell foam, neoprene, tubing.
I would say go for it if you have the time, its fun.
I'd like to look more into this but i dont know the first thing about using dielectric grease, silicone, fittings, cell foam, neoprene, etc to prevent condensation correctly. Thats kinda why i was looking for a guide. Would come handy in knowing what to protect after the main device is made.
I looked on ebay for Neslab and Haake, i'm not going to speand that much money for a water chiller heh, i'm more into buying a cheapo fridge from a pawn shop or something.
Question: Once i have the fridge, how small could i make this thing? i mean would i be able to put it into something smaller than a 18" x 18" x 18" cubical case?

Take a look here:

if you buy a mini fridge and stick a bucket of water in it its going to not do as well as you think, they are extremely small comperssors and not made to handle high heat loads over short time.
they would be like 1/12hp. most people use 1/4. big diff.
i would just research on the net then make your own.

And would a "Deep Freeze" freezer be better then a normal freezer?

A 'deep' freezer is one that speaks with profound wisdom.

And Y aint them [img] tags not working??
yes that is correct except the pump is in the wrong spot. To have good water pressure to the cpu, you would want the pump either submerged in the bucket or as an outtake on the bucket towards the bottom edge, and have the water go directly from the pump to the block.

Yeah it wont perform half as well, yet there a lot cheaper if you find the right one, and u dont need sub ambient temps. I got my fridge for free so im not complaining. The higher temps are worth the price.

Im not suggesting he just stick the res in the fridge, but put the Evaporator in the res.
Thanks guys, i appreciate all the information and support. As for right now though i think i'm going to stick to my dual D-Tek ProCore Rad (dual fans & shrouds on both units) idea i have for my Coolermaster Wavemaster TAC-T01 case. I might make a model of the case mod concept setup in 3dsmax and post it somewhere on the modding forum sometime.
Thx goes out to Thorilan for the general idea i have in mind!

Does anyone know how well a cooling unit from a drinking water fountain would work? I have access to a few decommissioned water fountains, but I'm not sure of the cooling capacity.
Here's a link to that case mod concept i was talking about if anyone wants to see it and give feedback. check this out .
