View Full Version : When adding more RAM, should I get the same kind?
Stupid question maybe... I have a 512mb stick of Kingston PC2700. I plan on getting another 512mb stick for a total of 1 gig.
Will I see best results if I buy the exact same memory? (brand, speed, model, whatever)

Not really - if you're not overclocking, then i suggest that you buy a stick of any pc2700 (not the cheapest that you can find, though) and use that.
If you are planning on overclocking your memory (or are already running it at overclocked settings) then I suggest that you get a stick of Pc3200, preferably from a manufacturer such as Corsair or Crucial, since then the memory will be able to cope better with the higher speeds you run it at.
But in short, you don't have to use the same manufacturer.

Well, realistically probably any RAM will work at default speeds. If you have a stick of PC2700 and a stick of PC3200 in the system, it'll only run as fast as the slowest stick of RAM. In other words, a new stick of PC3200 will only run at PC2700 speed when paired up with a PC2700. For overclocking, there are lots of advantages to getting a matched set of RAM (at least the same brand, speed, timings, and size) so that they play well with each other. Hey, why not get two new sticks of faster RAM and sell your old module?
Thanks for the replies...
I think I may sell my current one and get new ones... My current memory wont even run stabley at "fast" timings in the BIOS of my Epox board.
What is the "killer memory" on the market right now? As far as price for performance goes. I dont want to end up spending a lot.
Btw, I only plan on running it at PC2700, my fsb is staying at 166.
Lots of shiny new, fast, and expensive RAM available nowadays and I can't claim to know a lot about this subject, but here are a couple observations I've noticed. RAM that is fast and overclocks well does not always mean tight timings.
Some people are starting to have good results with Kingston PC2700 Value, but since you already have a stick that you're not happy with, then that might not be a good idea.
With all the bargains available with PC3200 RAM nowadays, maybe that's what you should consider? Twinmos PC3200 is good stuff for a nice price. Buffalo PC3200 with 6 layer PCB and Winbond chips do pretty good for a cheap price (newegg has 'em). Plan ahead for your next upgrade and get faster RAM then you think you need right now.
