Got the system in August 00, and the first time i changed the HS to a GORB it chipped parts off the edge-now its dead, what is the RMA process and does it cover stuff like that. Cause if i would not have messed with it it would still work. The chip is like 8 1/2 months old?? Any help please?

Also i can boot up in win2k and see the 2k screen (but after that i get a blue screen (fatal stop at blh blah blha) is that a dead chip since i cannot get through the errors

If the chip was an OEM the warranty is long since passed. If it was retail, you can contact AMD and see what they say.

wait you can still boot in win2k? I thought a dead chip was truely dead no post or nothing. hmmmmmm.

yesi definately chipped it-this is the thing. cant install win2k without files hanging in the copying procedure. Did a LLF-took the HD to an exact system as mine-did an install, no problems booted up fine-brtought HD back and plugged it in-CORRECTLY-bootup, all good, go to win2k screen(the one that says built on NT technology) then the blue screen again, saying something like-STOP IRQL LESS THAN or something like that-says restart, and i do and its just a vicious cycle. Is this the chip or something else-everything worked before i changed the HS?? Help

Are u overclocking? If u are try to run it at default speed.

No it was running @ default speed- gateway said that i had a 1 year hardware warranty, would that cover the chip-i took the case apart so i doubt that they would take it back, also destroyed the HS getting it off-it was rivited to the coldplate- do i have a 600mhz keychain

While I realise the variability in failure manifestations, I have never seen a "keychain cpu" that could get out of POST, let alone fail loading the O/S. Keep playin around. I think that CPU may have some breath still in it. Good Luck

I agree with Hoot, if it can POST then it probably is good and there might be something else wrong. Although this is not 100% for sure, but a POST is a good sign.

POST (power on self test ) right-well what else could it be-i have the partitons set up correctly, with fdisk. Worked Perfectly before the HS, mabe its a coinsidence. If i can ill try to put the chip in another slot system-if it gives me the same error on a different system then its the chip right? If it works fine in a differnt sys, could it be the mobo-cause the RAM, Video and sound have all checked out on another system?? Ive done lots of tweaks but no OCing, all to defalut but still no smooth boot up-it will NOT get through the full win2k install without hanging on certain files.??

hummm check the CD that you are using. Also you said that you took off the orignal HS? You MIGHT be running into a heat issue. Check and make sure that the new hs is installed correctly and that you used some good thermal paste. You can try and copy the cd to your hard drive and then do the install from the HD. Hope this helps. I would diffenately try a new CD or make sure the CD isn't scratched.

Ok this is the deal my friend bought a gateway and his manual talked about overclocking in it and in some ways said it was a good ting to do. LOL now this is gateway.

I say call them. They can't stop you from changing heatsinks. If they start giveing you a hard time about the heatsink deal tell them its their failt for riviting the heatsink down to the coldpad. Say something like you didn't have AC so you needed to change the heasink because it was overheating. Then if they try to ream you on it just tell them your going to call the Better Buissness Buerea(sp) Trust me if they try and call you on that one their crazy I have never seen a big company not drop to their knees at the words BBB.

Good luck on that rma man

Have you tried running it below the stock speed?

Funny you mention the "BBB" I pulled that same trick out on an internet business that jiped me on a chip that came with an orb. As soon as I said "BBB" the sales managers tone changed but I still didn't win the fight.....until I called the "BBB" :D They are now no longer in business..LOL..I wasn't the only one who called the "BBB" I guess a lot of people got burned by these people. The BBB dose work and it's there for us to use...just don't abuse it

Yes the BBB is to be used as a last chance trump card. I f I hadn't have pulled that card on them I'd still be sitting here with a crap cB0 stepping when I bought a cC0. Intel is all about ripping people off. So needless to say AMD will have someone new buying their CPUs on the next system I build unless they lock the L1 on the new MPs

That's what you get for trying to use the notorious core crackin' GORB on an Athlon..... :(

I personally dont try to RMA stuff that I know things have been done that void the warranty. I figure if I stay honest, someday someone will decide to be honest with me. TBird's are so cheap anyway - just pick yourself up an OEM 1 GHz chip.... $70 is hard to beat. Heck, I paid $62 for my Duron 700 not even 7 months ago....
