Apparently a 1Ghz model is being sold as I type, on the 'Home Shopping Network'. A compaq with an 'Athlon 4' mobile processor.

Yes. I did not state that, and it is a glaring omission. Palominos for the desktop are not due out until July at the earliest...the launch date for the dual Palomino server CPUs is now (subject to change) set at June 4, 2001.

I'll see if I can locate the article that states a date for the Palomino desktop launch..I suspect that the desktop Palomino will be different in a few aspects from the 'Server' version.

W. Jerry Sanders had this to say at a semi-conductor conference on 5/10:

"We're introducing 1.4 GHz imminently, 1.5GHz next quarter and faster clock speeds throughout the year. Duron has higher clock speeds than Celeron and blows away Celeron clock for clock and has higher clock speeds than Pentium III or will have in the second half. "
