Here is my mobo proc setup, abit ka7 with the overclocking built into the bios, ky 750mhz slot a.

Now when i go in and change the settings from 750 to 1gig in the bios it still show up as 750mhz when i boot the pc up. Can some one or everyone please explain to me how to sucessfuly over clock this biatch, I have recently installed a water cooling sys so heat shouldnt be a factor.

Tim

Hi Tim,

I hope you understand the basics of overclocking. Simply set your CPU for 1 gig from 750 will NEVER EVER work! (the showing of 750 after your tweaks is most probably because the mobo has reset itself to basic settings, because it booted up instable, if it even booted..., heard a beep when you started?)

If you don't know why this is, go to the homepage (overclockers.com), and select 'beginner guides' (two times, it's a sub menu on the left). Here are some good tips and basic how-to's.

AMD slot-A's are poor FSB overclockers, but if you don't want the hassle of getting and installing a GFD, it's the only way. Increase your FSB in LITTLE increments and every time again, test for stability. Nice job on the watercooling, but it would be very nice if you had some thermal probe somewhere to watch your CPU temp (you never know, bad block-cpu contact...). I have a car-thermometer probe foamed to the cpu-back, works fine, also measures incoming air-temp.

When your cpu starts to run instable (most slot-A's about 105~110FSB, increase voltage a bit, but watch your temps when increasing volttage, they will rise quite a bit! You 1.7V default CPU should be able to take up 1.8V as long as the temps are alright. Before starting to tweak voltages, be REAL sure to know what you are doing, as excessive CPU can and will blow your core! Extreme voltages give rise to thermal degradation, I advice against running CPU's on higher voltages above 40~45°C.

Problems loading windows (comp hangs), but stable boot-up's are coused by level 2 cache instability, lower your L2-multiplyer to go higher. This requires some applications, such as Mathlon or tweaked bioses. I've put mathlon 3.00 on the overclockers.com FTP site, (see the general discussions tab, a topic named 'FTP up!' or such..).

Hope I given you enough info for now to get going again. If you want some GFD info, be sure to come back (you are welcome anyway! :) ), as that is where the real overclocking for Slot-A CPU's start! Maybe I've mistaken you for a newbie, while you aren't, but starting with 4 posts, that would defy logics. 'bout the performance, your CPU should be able to hit 850~900 with a GFD, with proper cooling, the second part you already have.

Have a good time, hope to see you in the forum,
Murphy

p.s. you were the one mailing me? up2tim? Are you there?
