View Full Version : Athlon 4 released - Questions
The AMD site has all the details up now.
Initial speeds 850 - 1000MHz.
Runs at 1.2-1.4V, and can support DDR (OEM decision). Supported by the KT133A chip - does that mean it could be used in a desktop with voltage mods?
(AMD says the A4 uses lower system bus voltages - could this be achieved on a desktop?)
Just thinking that a 1.4V 1GHz chip could remove the need for noisy Deltas??

nah.......personally I don't believe much of what AMD says.......then again I don't believe Intel either. =)
According to Tom's Hardware.com, AMD claims that the new mobile Athlon 4 won't be able to run in today's socket a motherboards, even though one of the two new form factors is identical to the T-bird. So I guess I would be interested in seeing if AMD is just trying to keep people from making their own Palomino systems before the official release of the desktop version. Another concern is that even though the Athlon 4 is the same form factor of the T-bird, some of the pins are assigned differently, and some are used that were disabled in the T-bird.
Any thoughts?
After reading the TomsHardware article, it mentions that the new power saving techniques are achieved through lowering the CPU speed on the go. So, for a 1GHz chip in power saving mode, the speed may be reduced down to 500MHz.
This means that we could have an easier time overclocking, since now not only will we be able to change the FSB in Windows (through progs like CPUFSB), but ALSO be able to change the MULTIPLIER in Windows. Saves the hassle of going into BIOS!
Will this be possible?

Hi Guys,
You might want to check out the AMD roadmap on their site. I wouldn't upgrade to Athlon4 if I'm on a TBird.

The Thoroughbread and Barton Chips are going to rock. 0.13um and SOI, means low temps and HIGH GHZZZ!!

Seems the new Athlon4 will work in a desktop machine,
despite what AMD says. A BIOS update is all that is needed. Check out xbit labs for the news

You beat me to it... I saw the benches at Ace's. It appears that Heise News was trying to simulate the likely manner in which mobile Palomino and P3 would be outfitted for mobile use, while benching them on a desktop...The 'Athlon 4' was benched using an Asus A7V133..Someone correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the KT133E chipset released to take advantage of PowerNow!!
If anyone has any news regarding this, do tell.
