View Full Version : how much memory for farm machines?

I am thinking about expanding my SETI computers and I want to know what is a good amount of memory to buy? I am thinking with just putting on 98 because I am completely Linux ignorant and have no idea how to install those diskless LTSP setups. I tried it, read the directions and still ended up messing it up :)

So, I am going to buy a bunch of 1.2GB hard drives from a local mom and pop store ($10) and just install 98lite or something and have them running SETI all the time. Right now I am thinking that 128 DDR should be plenty for 98. Obviously I am trying to keep this as cheap as possible. Thanks for your help.

128 would be plenty. You could even make do with 64 if using 98 lite. Seti itself uses about 15MB of ram.

I never saw a 64mb. A while back I posted about a seller of Hynix 256MB PC2100 @ $16. here:

If you can't contact I can sell you some of mine.

No. They only go up to 144-148MHz.

Crucial makes 128MB PC2700 @ $27.99

I think Samsung has 128MB PC2700 too.

That should be your best bet.

Have a blast with your new crunchers.
