View Full Version : PowerNow - They key to our new overclocking?
PowerNow. This is coming on the new AMD Palomino's right. Do you think it will be able to be tapped into via software in order to overclock? Like softfsb used to be able to. ??

i dont think power now will be integrated into desktop palominos, theres no use, since power now is used to limit energy consumtion. im not sure if itll help for oc, in dont c why.
can u explain?
thx

There has been some speculation that a software overclock may be possible. I am maintaining a wait and see attitude on this one.
A lot of true AMD zealots I know, were sure that Palomino would be power/thermal management only. They certainly were wrong.
I'd like to see a software adjustable multiplier, who wouldn't? I'm not even going to venture a guess as to how 'PowerNow' is going to play a role in the ease, or difficulty of overclocking future Socket-A processors.

Assuming that the PowerNow functionality is just not removed for the desktop and server chips, I would think that the mobo would also have to support it...which a couple might do if they want to be overclocking boards. I think it would be great to be able to hot overclock. Be really nice to get a really good idea of whether or not your cpu can handle really high speeds without rebooting..or ever just adjust the voltage. Really nice. Hope it's able to be made functional in non-mobile processors, and then that it actually IS used.

AHA! He even thinks the same thing!
they've included it on the regular p4, so it might very well be included on the desktop athlon4. it's a technology that makes perfect sense for the non-power-user... 'turn down' the cpu when it's not being used, extending it's life span and saving energy.
if it is included, then it's whether it'll be readily supported by mobos, and then whether the options to change it on the fly will be easy enough to manipulate. either way, it's going to be interesting. if they include, then things will get really interesting... :)

I have this software that came with my MIS m/b, it is called fuzzy logic and it can O/C by software. I have yet to use it, I am already O/C a 1ghz to 1.3ghz by a FSB jumper, so have you guys heard of this? I am sorta leary to use it.
