I have been trying to make a computer for a freinds mom and have been having problems throught the build. But i finally got the hardware side working....I think. Anyway when the installation reaches the point where it detects hardware I got a illegal operation message about Msgsrv32. Then when i press close i get 2 BSOD's in a row both with the error # 0167:BFF9DFFF about Msgsrv32. Then after both BSOD's i get the error "MSGSRV32 caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0005:00002720." Then i have to restart the computer and then it repeats. I have no idea what is going wrong. Does anyone have ideas? There are a few scratches on the cd but nothing serious. Could that cause it? Help as soon as possible would be great!

Msgsrv32 GPF's are almost always caused by a hardware problem, and some cases...a driver incompatibility. Since you're experiencing Msgsrv32 BSOD's during the install of the OS, I would definitely suggest a hardware problem or conflict (possibly an incorrect BIOS setting?). The following MSKB article may be of some help to you...
Error Message: Msgsrv32 Caused a General Protection Fault in User.exe (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262998) :)

That article did give some insight but i am not sure if it helps to much because windows isnt installed yet :P I did a surface scan of the HDD just to make sure that wasnt it. I am not sure what else could be wrong besides maybe irq's getting messed up but i am not sure.
Specs:
QDI Legend V motherboard
466mhz celeron
matrox pci card for video
64mb sdram
4.1gb hdd
Creative 52x cd-rom
I know it is old it is just a replacement for her for awhile so she can get a new one later. Better then here P100 anyway.
Just so you know i did flash the bios before i started so that it could support the faster Proc.....maybe i havent done something right. hmmmmmmmm

the scratch on the CD wouldn't do it..take out everything that you don't need and try it..or even try other components and switch after its installed.. :)

I tried taking out the sound card and it didnt work so then i disconnected the cd-rom but it wont get past the boot screen and i cant tell the error because it has a logo instead of the normal screen (big QDI logo). any other ideas people?! i really need this comp to work.
General Protection Faults are often caused by memory issues. Had this exact same problem a few times, the ram worked enough to boot, but then never would get through installation. I just replaced the ram and it worked fine. Try memtest, you can boot to it right from dos, that may give you some insight.

You can remove everything except the video card, ram, cpu, and power supply. It should boot to the bios under those conditions. If not, you either have something plugged in wrong or one of those parts is bad. You can try out the parts in a friend's computer. The computer should beep when it boots to the bios. If it beeps anything other than one beep, then it could be either a bad ram or cpu.
