View Full Version : Which tests in 3dmark03 stress GPU and memory the best?

For the purpose of artifact checking, which tests should be looped to stress the GPU the most? Same goes for memory.

At one point I read that in 3dmark01, the 2nd bench (Dragothic) tested the GPU best for artifacts, while the 3rd bench (Lobby scene) tested the memory well. (Or maybe I have that backwards...)
In any case, since 3dmark03 is more stressful in general on video cards (more polygons, more and newer of everything, depending on the test), I was wondering about the breakdown of the newer tests. Information like this really speeds up stability testing :)

i don't know which stresses the card the most, but when i'm testing my overclocks, if i ever see artifacts, it's usually during the nature test. It seems to put a good load on my card and i dunno if the other tests are too dark to actually see the artifacts or what, but i can usually make it through the first 3 tests, but on the nature test, if there are any artifacts, it'll show up there.

just my experience anyhow.

I suppose I'll loop nature then...unless this thread gets more action

Do FSAA, aniso, or higher resolution make it more likely to get artifacts faster? Come on, we've all tested for artifacts - what have people found works the best for quick and effective testing? Any programs people recommend besides 3dmark03? I'm dling aquamark3 as we speak. I'm open to anything.

i keep aa and such off - and just look for artifacts anywhere

i run 3dmark and have gottena rtifacts, then i will go play ut2003 or Delta Force Blck hawk down for 3, 4, 5 7 hours straigt! with AA and FSAA on max and highest res i can and i get NO aritifacts.

I asked this question over at Rage3D (I'm a new 9800np owner) and was told to use 3DMark2001SE. Specifically, to use the nature scene to test memory and DOT3 bump mapping to test GPU.

Nature seems to work really well, I was unlucky enough to get Infineon 3.0ns ram, and nature scene will show bad artifacting almost instantly (in the first loop usually) whenever I set memory to 337.50 or higher, but below that it is fine.

I've pushed the core up to 410 so far and done the bump mapping demo a few times and haven't noticed any problems, but I wasn't sure what to look for as far as GPU artifacting goes so I backed off.

How do you loop parts of 3DMark2001SE? I keep having to sit there and click run benchmark each time the scene ends :).

I agree about in game not artifacting. I've played CS, Wolf: ET, UT2003, GTA: Vice City etc for hours at settings that artifact almost instantly in 3DMark without experiencing any issues.

I've found C&C Generals will artifact really easy.

with 3dmark 2k1 nature is almost all gpu/vid memory and dragothic is alot gpu/vm. On 03 they are all almost all gpu intensive except the plane one and nature is the most video card memory intensive
