ping question

when i update servers in multiplayer games like unreal2003 battlefield i get really high ping numbers.. i have DSL from sbc yahoo.. and i was wondering why the hell is it like that? i join the servers and the ping isnt even near as high as it said it would be.. which is really annoying cuz i dont know which server pings well for me..

do you guys have any idea how to fix it?

Well, what pings are you getting?

Also, it has a lot to do with geographical location. If you try to play on a server in china, you're going to get a bad ping. If you try to play on a server that's 3 blocks away, you're going to get a really good ping.

also make sure you're not running programs like Kazaa or anything that downloads.....

I know what you are talking about aabighead, I am on dial up and the ping for the server in the browser will show say 280ms but while I am in the game it will show up as 70, so I am not quite sure what it is showing.
