I've always heard that when an AMD Athlon processor's voltage is set above 1.85 volts, it is easily destroyed, no matter what cooling you'd have. But also, on that post the guy had with liquid nitrogen meets AMD, he's set his 1 ghz athlon to 2.1 volts to o/c it to 2016 mhz. How is this possible?

I run mine at 2.06 volts and have had one up to 2.45 volts. 2.06 volts seems to be the sweet spot. I don't know how long they will last. Rockhammer, who has contruibuted to the articles here at Overclockers has a Duron that has been at 2.34 volts for about six months and the chips perfromance is slipping.

I've had my duron600@1000 at 2.27V since Christmas, temps stay around 45C max watercooled. No performance hits yet, though I'm (hopefully temporarily) back at 600 while I try to unlock my cpu again having cleaned off the old pencil marks... ;P

2016 mhz might be possible with that kind of voltage, if you use liquid nitrogen cooling.

there's no question that running a processor at above-spec voltage shortens its lifespan. that much is a fact.

however, there are loads of people running processors waaaaaaaaay above spec and they have no problems. i myself have had a duron 600 at 1.88-1.94v for about nearly 9 months now, with a variety of coolers, and it's still fine.

no, raising the vcore above 1.85v won't instantly kill your proc if you have good cooling. but yes, it is shortening the chip's lifespan overall. but that's probably from 10yrs down to 4yrs or something, so i wouldn't really worry.

good luck and be sensible! :)

Are you guys sure...btw, I have a $20 fan that I just picked up off the shelf, but was recommended by the guy who works there. That's all I have, it's just standard I think. Would 1.85V be ok for something like that? Also, I get about 45°C at idle when my 1.33 ghz is o/ced to 1.4ghz.

your idle temps are probably too high... but you're really only bothered about the full load temps.. what are they?

as for a $20 hsf.. if you want to do any decent overclocking, you're going to have to buy a good cooler. which cooler do you have currently? read up on the main page about coolers. joe has loads of reviews of all sorts of coolers. when you have an idea of what you want, post in the cooling section to find out people's personal experiences with that hsf.
