Yeah I think most of the non-naive members of the human race already figured that one out... :D
Nice article

there was alot of this just in general in how they basically made their benchmark to suit them and funnily enough, not the competition, many noticed this when the results of, I think, the penitum 4 in particular seemed overly low.

I just feel sorry for that guy who just seen the advert with Geoff Goldblum (or however you spell his name) proclaiming supremecy - and decided "oo ill treat myself". But then my dog eats these odd cardboard looking things for treats so go figure.

in one interview or other two Apple big hats made it obvious they did not even know about the AMD Opteron, which was why Apple were calling some G5 machine the first 64 bit desktop computer to be shipped.

but on a possitive note, at least the G5 gets somewhat near to AMD and Intel's latest. The G4's speed was just getting embarrassing for something costing that much.

Maby apple did'nt know that boxx had the workstation out at the time, but they surely knew amd had released the opteron. I guess they might have thought there was no motherboards with agp around, but usually before making claims like that you should make sure! ;)

Anyway, unless I'm mistaken there has been some very expensive 64 bit workstations around for a couple of years. (Sun, Alpha, SGI??) I imagine they would have the same target audience as these, and the only one who would categorise them diferantly would be apple... (destop, workstation, blah blah)

I think Apple have an amazing ability to spout crap - firstly on the "first 64 bit processor" claim, either way you look at it they are wrong - if you really want to be pedantic, then you could say that graphics cards had the first 128bit processors...

Also claiming something that their new G5 is " the world’s fastest personal computer" really depends on what you are using it for and even so, they used words in such a vague manner, it is impossible to backup for example, I'm sure (if you had the money) you could get a Cray SX-6 and use it in a personal computer like fasion, and hand down the smack to the G5, as an example, anyway you look at it, they can't make a statement like that.

That was one of the funniest articles I’ve read in a while. Especially when he responded to the e-mails.

I believe they said that it was the first "64bit personal computer", not the first 64bit processor. Unfortunatly they seem to have a strange view of what a personal computer is, as they claim the G5 is not a workstation... (I wonder if they ever called the G3 or G4 workstations?)

I don't have a problem with them calling the G5 the worlds fastest processor. I think intel and amd do that whenever they release a new processor, and for a claim like that it is enough that it's the fastest at something...

I find it really odd that a company who is targeting professionals on diferant fields has the nerves to distort benchmarks to make their computers seem fastest at something it's not. They have done it allways by selecting a certain filter in photoshop and then claiming results as "photoshop performance". A respectable company would leave benchmarking for others...

Still, you can see that the marketing works. I usually hang out at boards catering for computer music makers, and we frequently have people going "gosh, the G5 will kick ass, look at the benches at apple.com"

I liked this one... Found the following interview with Apple's VP of Hardware Engineering, John Rubinstein, and IBM's Chekib Akrout. The interview kicks off with some confusion over AMD's Opteron...

DMN: Now, you're saying it's the first 64-bit desktop machine. But isn't there an Opteron dual-processor machine? It shipped on June 4th. BOXX Technologies shipped it. It has an Opteron 244 in it.

Rubinstein: Uh...

Akrout: It's not a desktop.

DMN: That's a desktop unit.

Akrout: It depends on what you call a desktop, now. These… From a full desktop per se, this is the first one. I don't know how you really distinguish the other one as a desktop.

DMN: Well, it's a dual processor desktop machine, just like that one.

Akrout: It's not 64, then.

DMN: Yes, it's a 64-bit machine with two Opteron chips in it. It started shipping June 4th.

Akrout: That we'll double check, but in my mind, it wasn't.
