I have no idea where to put this post, or if it is acceptable. I hope it is since it is not going to speak of warez, but if it isn't please accept my appology in the beginning and delete my post.
I am trying to get Kazaa to connect from my university but I am having a lot of problems. It seems the only thing that works out here is Blubster, but it has Gator and other things I would rather not deal with. I was wondering if there was any way of getting around the block that many universities, like mine, have on Kazaa. I can get it to connect, but only at speeds around 1K. Please help!

not acceptable topic bud :D
for several reasons..
1. file sharing (illegal)
2. circumventing campus security ("hacking")
Well, file sharing is not illegal. Its what you share and download that determines wether its illegal or not. And as far as the campus security goes, there really isn't anything you can do about it. Its thier network so they can decide what ports are open and which ones are closed. About all you can do is use a different p2p program. And make sure your usage of it is legal. ;)

Can you name anything these days that is legal to copy and distribute using file sharing programs that don't have sources online already for that sort of thing? :)
books? Nope, audio? heck no lol.. video, no...programs, definately not unless they are GNU or similar, in which case there are legit websites you can get them from. About only thing legal to share on kazaa is virusses LOL...

But still, this guy needs help to solve a problem of his!
Try changing the port settings of Kazaa to use a port different to 1214 to connect - mess around with that setting to see if it improves.

this problem cannot be fixed.. as stated above, the school has their settings how they want, you cant get around them. And There is no place to change port settings in Kazaa that I recall, in DC you can though but that wont help you.

Kazaa automatically port searches which is why its such a pain to block.. it evetually uses port 80 which is the standard port used by Browsers for connectivity, this however ensures that Kazaa runs very very slowly indeed as indicated in this example the sitiation only gets worse when in situation with high browser use such as a university... I expect that they are trying to block it and as such attempting to get around this may break the universitys rules or the law

Ooookay...
Consider this then - unless the university have SAID something about file-sharing, then go and ask your head of computing - to see if it is disallowed... just ask "Hey, I would like to know whether I am allowed to run kazaa here" making no mention of the fact that you have tried and failed...
After that, if he says no, then you know where you stand :) However, if he says YES, then go away, come back two days later, and put your problem to him.
Failing that, use a different file-trading network / software.

Good post.
I'd also like to add that Kazaa and other file sharing networks are not always sharing only copywritten material, and yes, people actually do download legal things.
I dont know how many times i've downloaded patches, mods, freeware, pictures etc let alone those short home made video clips. It's not all bad...

File Sharing is allowed, but it is "strongly discouraged" here. Also, Blubster works for some reason out here, so I am not sure why it would work and Kazaa won't.

its called a 'Terms of Use agreement' which they usually make you sign before getting internet access. Which dictates what you have the right to and not to do with their services. Even if you don't remember signing one, you probably did. Since that will be the end all of reasoning for it. And ya know that pictures are copyrighted too, heh, even if it doesn't have the little cpyright symbol on it?

Of course pictures are, it simply depends on which picture it is.
