Here is a great website that lists all the services for windows
It lists what they are called, what they do, and what you should/can do. Find it here
For Windows XP

For Windows 2k

*no listings for windows 95/98/me*

That is an excellent website. Everytime I reload Windows, that is one of my first stops. I have about half of the background services switched off, and everything feels much faster. I know I regained about 35 mb of memory after turning a bunch of services off.
Thanks for this post. I have been wondering about that for a long time.

No problem, my CCNA teacher showed us some cool stuff today as we are way ahead of where we need to be and so tonight i get to try it out on my machine.
Even for those who dont tweak or what have you it's nice to know that stuff is running and is supose to be there...
