hey i think i just killed my CPU....., i had a Duron 650, did the pencil trick, after a while it wore off.... no biggie cause i ordered a T-bird 900 mhz.

Now with the T-bird 900mhz, i decided to use the Window Defogger kit. so i put some of the paint on each L1 bridge, fired it up, and set the Mulitplier to 9.5 (default is 9.0)
it set the CPU speed to 550mhz....hmmm
took the CPU out again and checked to see if the L1 bridges are not touching. to make shure i took some Nailpolish remover (acetyl) and gently rubbed some paint away. Put the CPU back in , fired up, same difference....

ok i decided to do the pencil trick again, took the Nail polish remover again, took all the paint off...put the CPU in again (without the pencil on it yet) and started up (i forgot to put the cooler on), left it on 8 seconds after the PC booting up, but not initializing the CPU, i heard some Voltage changes, Turned it off...

uhh..never worked since.....

DAMNIT!
did i really bust it?

Too bad. It's probably gone.

That's a stinker. It's almost assuredly time for the funeral. They only last a couple of seconds without a HSF installed. If it doesn't show any burn marks, you may be able to RMA the CPU. I would certainly try.

I kilt one under similar circumstances, only took about 3 seconds to cook the little bird. A moment of silence for the dead bird please....................:-(

RMA ?

You'll need to contact your vendor in order to obtain this..I wouldn't offer any information about the lack of a cooler being attached..it won't increase your chances. :)

Good luck,

A sad story. I did the same thing with my duron, even though it survived. By some reason I didn't remember to put the HSF back after a pencil job. Well, the computer posted, and let me into bios, and then it suddenly died. Of course I realized what I had done, and I never thought I could use that duron again (it was burnin' hot). Anyway, I put the HSF back on and turned it on and, VOILA!! it worked just fine. I guess that I was very lucky, and it's run just fine after that.

Very sad story! I have seen this issue posted a few times now. Very rare that the chip survives.
I almost did the same thing but instead I decided just to unplug the fan and leave the heatsink on just to see how fast it would heat up. It took about 1 1/2 minutes to get to about 68c and then I pluged the fan back in.
With no heatsink there is no possible way for the heat to dissipate.
