View Full Version : are you my daddy?

Hello. I was just wondering what you all would recommend for my 45 year old father to play.
He likes adventure-type games. What I mean by adventure is walking around (first person view) in a beautiful environment (tropical rain forest with a beautiful waterfall) and having encounters with wild animals (dinosaurs, npc's, anything else that moves) and blasting them away with some type of gun. Nothing that might be too confusing. Basically a game where you have to get from point A to point B. Nothing with puzzles you have to solve or anything.
I hope I drew a clear picture in your head.
Now, what would you recommend?
Think something like Turok for the playstation and Morrowind for the pc linked together. That would be perfect, I think.
My dad's specs:
2.8c
r9700 pro
768mb pc3200
I hope you guys are kind enough to help out my old man. :p
p.s. I've tried getting him into ut2k3, but he didn't like all the futuristic stuff. He's old fashioned, can't blame him. He likes the natural environment like I mentioned above. Think trees, grass, mountains, the sun, rivers, etc. Basically like the last games in 3dmark 2001se and 2003 ("nature" and "mother nature") :p
EDIT: for grammar errors

Serious Sam the Second Encounter...atleast the demo starts in the jungle and a temple. Not sure about the whole game though.

Was that a typo or a joke?
I've never played the first one and only the demo of the second, so I'm asking a serious (haha) question.

ummm....that's a good question. Not much pops into my head.....Serious Sam is the only real brainless shooter that I can think of....most games these days are either story-driven or puzzle driven.
WHat else have you tried on him? Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is good...there's some minor puzzle solving, however....of course, that is if he likes star-wars...well, it's not a requirement, but it helps. And if you want something newer to take advantage of that VERY nice system, he could try Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy...it was just released, I just got it...it's decent so far, but there's a bit more puzzle solving than in Jedi Outcast.
What about RPGs? I'd suggest something, but I'm not up-to-date on the PC RPGs.....
That's about all I can do to help for now.....unless something were to pop into my head. Are there any other criteria that he's willing to play? From what it sounds like, he happened to pick a small and relatively unplayed genre.

I know you said he doesn't like futuristic stuff, I'm not big on sci-fi either, but Halo has a lot of beautiful outside landscapes and is a great game for casual gamers. The graphics aren't anything special now, but he will find himself saying wow, that landscape is incredible a lot and its an easy game to play.

well, soldier of fortune 2 has some nice scenery, and it's modern, but not futuristic.
It has a story though......

Medal Of Honour should be good .

Yes.
That is all I have to contribute to this thread....
Okay fine I'll recommend some games for your daddy (me).
Chrome, Vietcong, Dino Crisis 2, and Giants Citizen Kabuto would all fit into those oddly narrow tastes your old man has. What do you think is up with his nature/gaming complex? :)

Yep, the Sam games are GREAT for that and lot's of fun to play to boot.

woah, you guys are too nice:cool:
let me describe my dad a little more in depth.
about 2 months ago, he never touched a computer. he puts up vinyl siding for a living. he types with each of his index fingers and has trouble looking for the right letters.
i have most of the games mentioned above and they are wayyy too complicated for him. he's still getting used to using the mouse and keyboard at the same time to move about in ut2k3.
i don't think he'll be able to memorize all the right buttons to do some of the neccessary stuff such as "r" for reloading etc. he uses the arrow keys instead of "w, s, a, d."
there has to be a simple first person adventure game out there......the challenge is, who knows of it?
i bought the 3-pack of the Myst series for $20 not knowing it was a "point and click" type of game. he totally got frustrated with that game after 5 minutes because he wasn't able to go where he wanted and could only follow the path the game had set up.
kind of like all the final fantasy series previous to final fantasy X where u can go anywhere u want, but then in final fantasy X, you can only go on the path provided. it was hysterical watching him cursing at the game and clicking non stop on top of a hill saying "why can't i go up the @#$%@@% hill?!?!?! stupid piece of...." well u get the rest
he tried Morrowind. he said he absolutely loved the scenery but it heavily lacked of action.
just think Morrowind but with a gun.
c'mon! i know you're out there!
cheers

Ok you could try him on splinter Cell although it's not a STU and stealth is the name of the game..... if you want scenary and sunsets and eyecandy..... well either IL-2 Sturmovik of Lock-On but these are flight-sims... you never know with dads!
Honestly SLO DWN, it sounds like your old man should just stay away from PC gaming. PC gamers seem to value complexity and depth of gameplay over anything else. Even in action games. It's one of the major factors that makes PC gaming different from console gaming.
The serious sam games are about as simple as it gets when it comes to FPS'. Beyond those games you really have to go to "back in the day" FPS' to get that kind of simplicity.
I suggest your father try to learn how to press the reload button or just accept the fact that PC gaming might not be for him
With that said, I still say Giants Citizen Kabuto. And maybe he should try Dungeon Siege. If he can handle equipping armor, weapons etc its about as simple as it gets on a PC.
* After recommending Dungeon Siege Gnerma calmly walks over to his trash can and retches up his dinner, his self respect, and his lower intestine. IN THAT ORDER.

I agree. Serious Sam is as easy as it gets unless you want to play Doom I and he is a grown man, I'm sure he can hit the r button if he has too, but then again Serious Sam does it for you.
You'd better tweak the gfx for him tho.

you're a genious dood, i never thought of it that way. it's wayyy true. he got into flash games(online games) and card games and what not. he really wanted like a virtual reality game but i guess there's no such thing.....yet.
maybe he'll force himself to use all the other buttons when half life 2 comes out:D
thanks for all your other input though, guys.
about tweaking his gfx card, i already o/c'd the cpu to ~3.2ghz and he's pretty happy with it. i chose not to o/c his gfx card, yet(i don't see any need to for flash games:D )

I meant tweaking his gfx in serious sam II to get the most out of that 9700 Pro.
Just in the demo there are more video options then I've seen in any other game, ever. Its probably the same or better in the retail version.
Yeah, no game is really going to push that card to its limits just yet, I was just refering to the in game settings.

There are a lot in Serious Sam, but the video config (http://home.bak.rr.com/gnerma/TRAODvideoConfig.gif) in Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was amazing. Too bad the game sucked :)

Will rock and SErious sam are good games for scenerey, I would say dungeon siege, its not a shooter, but it has nice landsacpes andis pretty easy to manuever, Maybe the original unreal would be good. If i think of anything else i will post it up.

My dad loves to play Medal of Honor : Allied Assault online. He also isnt good with a keyboard and mouse but he has fun playing online as a american or german with the machine gun. He runs around and fires, i only needed to show him how to change the gun and open doors.

 Since i'm prequalified being your Dad's age and all (and thanks for the qualifier there), may I recommend "Gunman Chronicles", not much problem solving, and kinda linear, but most FPS are to some extent. Another cool one would be "Undying" and "Wheel of Time", although it gets a little complicated. Although sounds to me like he's a prime candidate for "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City!" woot woot! Set 'em up son, he'll love you for it later!:D

moh:aa....EASY game, my dad has played it and the only time he yells it when it lags...he loves the game, he also liked D2:LOD, not really a scenary game but hey, old men might have similar tastes...

Yeah until you get to the sniper town level.
And you have to reload your weapons
Other than that, it would be good since there are a lot of outdoor levels. And 'dads' usually like that realistic history stuff :)
what about morrowind...thats a good game, isnt futuristic, more of rpg tho...he might like it.

He will LOVE thief and thief 2 and any expansions/ etc they might have. Not very fast paced, but they are/were gorgeous in their day (though a bit shadowy.) The game was simple and yet required strategy... although it was intuitive. Leave a dead guard at his post and his buddies might get upset, etc. You could move around freely (although you did have set objectives). It was generally just a great game.

My friend just got Savage, and said it was a nicely done game. It was fairly simple, but you could do alot. It may be a bit more complicated than just a fps game, since you need to upgrade yourself, but it involves hunting animals and stuff.

What about Counter Strike or Americas Army?

How about No One Lives Forever, and NOLF2. Very tongue and cheek about the old 60 spy flicks. The scenery varies a lot. different parts of the world and it's not too difficult to play. I'm 42 and thought it was pretty fun and funny at the same time.
how about deer hunter 4?

check out the preview movie for Far Cry i think it is called. keep it in mind for when it comes out the whole thing takes place on a gorgeous tropical type setting it sounds like exactly what your dad wants- obviously i have no idea about how easy the interface is since it isnt out yet.
Well SLO DWN, since this thread is back what did you end up getting your old man?

Serious Sam or Deer Hunter Avenger would be good to try and they are not too complicated.

ya, Americas Army has great scenery but it involves tactics. If he likes going where he wants doing what he wants, i suggest GTA3 and Vice City. He could get used to the third person. But hey! its fun driving where you want and running over people.

Cabellas deer hunt 2004 is great(I actually like that game for some reason) Ice age, and 4x4 off road fury 2 are great games like that.

i got him vice city.....he loves it to death....but he's having tremendous trouble controlling the car when he drives it. he has a blast with it otherwise though......the scenery is very realistic and he likes to watch the female pedestrians walk by him and bumping into them......lol....he's been playing it on and off for the past 2 weeks and really enjoys it. i have this game on ps2 but he's not into consoles b/c of the controller.
keep the recommendations coming guys!

FattyMcNastyXK

those cost a lot and if he doesn't like them then its money down the drain.
Get the regular GTA3, he'll like how you can have sex with hookers in the car to get health.
