I know one person that picked up a dvd burner and he worked with it for about 6 hours before he could actually burn anything. To top it off he wanted to fill a disc (mass storage)... well at 2x burn for 4GB it kinda took forever. Not really worth it to me yet. Maybe when they get it faster. Now if your happy to just start the burn process and go to sleep or something (read a book, make dinner, and take a shower) then ya I think it would be worth it to you.
You could always get a USB 2.0 Hard Drive for about half the cost of a dvd burner and use it as many times as you like.

I just bought a dvd burner the other day. Takes forever, but when you sleeping, time passes by pretty fast. ;)
Its better than burning 100 CD's. :D
But maybe something like an Ipod? 30 gigs, small, and light. Just an idea.
An Ipod would be pretty expensive for an application to mass backup, although it is a sweet player!
I'd reccomend not picking up a DVD burner just yet. Standards haven't been established fully (geesh!), and again, it takes a while with speeds today. I'd say by next year DVD-Rs will be more practical. But hey, early adopters always have the experience and bragging rights!
This (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=529421&sku=K450-8012) is a Removable Hard Drive rack that mounts in the 5 1/2" bay and you can remove it at your leisure. You could also make some drive images with some software and if one drive fails, just throw the removable in there. Being removable, you can also store it off-site or in a safer place. This option would be about 120 dollars for a 100gig (at least) drive, compared to 100 dollars on a burner as well as expensive media ($1+ a Disc ATM)
