I got an email today

"Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!"

Attached was a file called "patch.exe"

For kicks i let yahoo run its' nortan anti virus thing and much as i expected this came up

"Scan result: Virus W32.Dumaru@mm found. File not cleaned. "

I really wish they would at least make me laugh...or think...or something, this is just a lame waste of my time

But incase there are a few of you out there who think MS emails patches for IE then...here is your warning i guess.

Some people will get scared by that email, and run the patch though..... it's sad but true!

i guess the theory here is that if you speak of a virus in the email then obviously it isnt a virus attached to the email...

Gimme a break you could email something that said 'do not run this it IS a virus' in broken english and half the people would STILL get infected by it somehow.

lmao! you'r so right you'r almost left!

My mom once tried to open a 3byte music file and she was franticly trying to get my to give her some headphones

Stuff like that REALLY annoys me.

Maybe I'll make a little bat that opens the CMD and says "You are stupid, you could have just b33n infected with 4 virus.;The easiest d3f3nce to breach is 4 stupid 455.;Don't be the 345y, 0r stupid."
(all misspellings where intentional;))

I could just imagine what some people might think... would be so funny... 'cept I don't know that antivius' would stop that, would they?

My mom once gave her AOL pw away even though it says on the bottom of ALL!!! im's

"AOL will never ask for your password or other personal information"

*sigh*

Needless to say within 2 weeks our email accounts were being used to mass send porn emails and aol shut them down.

you mean something like this (http://www.ice-rigs.com/downloads/this_is_a_virus.bat)?

Im gonna have fun watching my logs to see how many people download that ;)

(dont worry its a harmless batch file that i just wrote, it wont do anything to your computer, you may check it before you run it by right clicking and choosing edit if you wish)

EDIT: if your not using MSIE then you will probably have to right click that link and choose save as.

Some people just don't have any idea. I know if someone informed me that I could have been infected with a deadly virus, and that I should go to see a doctor immediately, I wouldn't be surprised if I visited my doctor.

fixed.

I never understood how email viruses spread so well, I mean you really do have to be pretty dumb to open such obvious crap.

Except bat files can't do that... :)

A lot of them make use of exploits in mail readers (notably in Outlook and Outlook Express). They use the exploits to automatically run the virus, without the user interacting. They might not even know they're infected.

Try this out, see if you pass:
http://www.gfi.com/emailsecuritytest/

It'll email you a whole bunch of emails that test your email client to see if it has any exploits that could automatically run things, or modify files on the harddrive, or whether it lets a test virus go through (it's the "test virus code" adopted by all virus scanners as a 'not a real virus' but test that it's working tool)

It was way back in the old days that virues were spread manually. Klez and SoBig wouldn't have been So Big if people had run patched mail clients and virus scanners. (horrible pun intended)

lol, it just opens a command box that displays some text. Dont worry, i would never think of posting anything harmfull or illegal here on OC (or any place else for that matter)
heres the source just to make you less trusting individuals happy:

@echo off
echo Connecting to 240.113.2.67 via ftp...
PING 1.1.1.1 -n 2 -w 1000 >NUL
echo downloading files...
PING 1.1.1.1 -n 2 -w 1000 >NUL
echo 23 files copied to C:\Windows\System32
echo 245 files delted from C:\Program Files
PING 1.1.1.1 -n 3 -w 1000 >NUL
echo You are stupid, you could have just b33n infected with 4 virus.
echo The easiest d3f3nce to breach is 4 stupid 455.
echo Don't be the 345y, 0r stupid.
pause

EDIT: yes i know using a ping command to have it wait is somewhat ghetto, but i dont know the real command
