Upgraded from P3 @733/Asus combo to Tbird/Abit/PC150.. specs:
Abit KT7A
Tbird AXIA C 1.g
Kingmax 128mb PC150 ("new" version 1 (16x8 - apparently supercedes the old 8x8 PC150 Rev 1.2)
rest out of original config:
Gforce 2 GTS 32
SB PCI64
DE500 10/100 NIC
IBM GXP 30Gb ATA100 7200...
32x CD etc etc
W98
Problem - installed new MB/axia/mem ok. Used bios defaults initially to "get things going" BUT... Defaulted first to Athlon 500?.. ok I thought to start with anyway.... Got W98 stable (don't start on me you W2000 guys!), loaded VIA 4.31 up, still ok, flashed ABIT BIOS to ZT. still ok. And then..........
Used softmenu to set CPU/FSB to 7.5x133 (default for 1.gig C) and voila - posts ok but stalls at w98 load. Backed off to 500 again, ok. I'll cut a long story short. I simply CANNOT get this thing to get into w98 at any multiplier/fsb > 7.5x100. I have unlocked cpu so can mess with multipliers - got it to 1300 'n something @130 FSB but it will not restart at that speed. In fact the ONLY way I can restart at ANY speed greater than 750 is power off, back on, wait, then push Reset to kickstart the damn thing) Issue though seems to be with ANY multipler at 133FSB. It will boot ok off FDD at any FSB - its W98 that upset. - all kinds of weird erors like stack overflows etc, also tried using a spare HDD to try a cold W98 install at 7.5x133 - never got past the "copying files" stage - similar errors. Also corrupted registry several times . I am at a complete loss.. I actually have two of these systems side by side and BOTH are exhibiting exactly the same symptoms.
1. PSU is new Enermax 350W.
2. Have already tried removing GTS, SBPCI64,NIC, put in old ISA VGA standalone, same prob.
3. Have tried upping vcore through increments up to 1.85 to try and juice it, no change.
4. Kingmax PC150 is the "new" version 1 (16x8 - supercedes the old 8x8 PC150 Rev 1.2 ). Would that be a problem anyway as I haven't (sucessfully) gone past 133FSB and this stuff is Cas2 @133, Cas3 @150?
5. It will boot into W98 ok (after kicking it up the arse via reset) @130FSB but not 133.
6. Have tried leaving BIOS at defaults, optimal & "safe" settings.
7. Left memory timings at default.
8. Cooling seems ok? (Taisol CGK) at approx 45C after overnight rolling Q2demos @10x100, approx 30c idle.
9.Tried K7 CLK_CTR function in the advanced options in BIOS - no change.
10.Even "erased" the graphite off the L1 bridges just in case it was a "pencilling problem"!. Nada, zip, nothing 'cept it DID recognise CPU @default 7.5x133 but of course it wouldn't sodding boot at that (but WILL boot at any FSB LESS than 133)!

Any assistance appreciated

Oh another possiblility are the via 4.31 drivers. Several people had problems with them. Try an older version, I am using 4.25.

Yeah - been there, had 4.25 onboard when I first started it up after upgrade, I went to 4.31 as a matter of course to try and eliminate probs. Thanx anyway.

Dang - how about that memory - did that PC133 stick change anything?

WIll try PC133 tonite... I 've just found some traffic re Kingmax and different issues with different M/boards, common denominater seems to be Kingmax PCB version and VIA chipsets:

http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/r_kingmax/page2.shtml

.... whatever..... If I resolve this with non-Kingmax PC133 I'll update post(s) in case anybody else has similar issues. I've posted this in MEMORY and AMD MOTHERBOARDS (oops, multiple posts in there, sorry) Forums too so I'll update those with the URL.

Cheerss..

Does it lock right when the desktop loads? If so , try changing the KT7_CLK to optimal in the bios instead of default. It is a known bug in the abit bios versions YH and up I think. I worked for me. Let me know.

It was the damn Kingmax - put in Century PC133 and off it went (and is still going now at 10x133 / 1.825v / 51C under load). Will sort out Kingmax on Monday (as I want to get to 10x140) and repost results in case other people strike a similar problem.Thanx
